Description

This textbook is a guide to success during the PhD trajectory. The first part of this book takes the reader through all steps of the PhD trajectory, and the second part contains a unique glossary of terms and explanation relevant for PhD candidates. Written in the accessible language of the PhD Talk blogs, the book contains a great deal of practical advice for carrying out research, and presenting one’s work. It includes tips and advice from current and former PhD candidates, thus representing a broad range of opinions. The book includes exercises that help PhD candidates get their work kick-started. It covers all steps of a doctoral journey in STEM: getting started in a program, planning the work, the literature review, the research question, experimental work, writing, presenting, online tools, presenting at one’s first conference, writing the first journal paper, writing and defending the thesis, and the career after the PhD. Since a PhD trajectory is a deeply personal journey, this book suggests methods PhD candidates can try out, and teaches them how to figure out for themselves which proposed methods work for them, and how to find their own way of doing things.

User’s Reviews

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐This book will help you survive your STEM PhD program. I wish this was published when I started my PhD program, but nonetheless, the information it provides regarding how to develop your skill in reading papers, summarizing, literature review, formulate research questions, writing your dissertation step by step, publishing to journals is outstanding. i specially like the diagrams that outlines each phases of research question formulation, literature review to dissertation writing. You might wanna join them up and hang on the wall. Also, tips on time management, avoiding burn out, using apps and digital journaling are really helpful. Kudos to the author for writing this excellent PhD guide. Thank you!

⭐As a PhD Candidate writing a dissertation proposal, I wish I had A-Z of the PhD Trajectory when Istarted my journey. There were many areas that outlined in the book that I stumbled across along theway, but there were still nuggets for me to learn at this late stage. The author indicated the book waswritten for the STEM fields. While my master’s degree was in a STEM field, my PhD is in education. Iread this from the perspective of someone in the social sciences. The book was organized well, and was a very easy read with doses of humor. My favoriteheading was “When Procrastination Hijacks Your Planning.” There were practical suggestions on how toget started with a research journal, maintain writing as a daily habit, how to be organized within yourresearch, work scheduling and life-balance routines. I read this book as I was struggling to synthesize theinformation for my lit review. The practical information learned here helped! I’ve already triedincorporating ideas about breaking bad habits, maintaining focus and rewards. There were a few areas that did not apply to my journey, such as checking out your new city andpreparing and executing experiments, but the suggestions in those sections were solid based on my ownmoving and academic experiences. Dr. Lansoght also provides great advice and cheerleading to nonnativeEnglish writers. The guide attempts to bring 21st century digital literacy into book form, which can bechallenging, since the internet is ever-changing. As someone who has connected with researchers allover the world via #AcademicTwitter and blogs, I agree with her that these connections are important. Ilove all of the internet suggestions given and have already learned a few new tips. When I saw all thelinks, however, I worried that the book could quickly become outdated. In fact, I found one broken link. Iwon’t indicate here what it is; but if you come across one, google it and there will be other similarsuggestions in the topic realm. That is one way to continue to be digitally literate and get the most outof the where she tries to guide you.I read this as an e-book and did not see it in book-form. The screenshot examples were helpful, but I’m going to gather that they are clearer in print than on the computer screen. In many cases therewas a lot of text resulting in being blurry on computer screens. This is my only criticism.I strongly recommend A-Z of the PhD Trajectory to new PhD students. I also suggest doctoraladvisors consider this as a textbook for seminar students, to guide them through their journey.
