    Description

Jesus is an Asian. But due to historical circumstances he comes back now to Asia as a European. Michael Amaladoss is making an effort in this book to rediscover the Asian Jesus. This is not a book to be read through. Reading must lead to the contemplation of the images set in the context of the life of Christ. A certain familiarity with the story of Jesus in the Gospels is presupposed. Other believers who are inspired by Jesus may also contemplate these images profitably. Contemplation would lead to communion.

⭐An excellent book on the Asian experience of Jesus with a particular focus on China and India. The book has sections on Jesus as “Sage”, “Avatar”, and “Satyagrahi” as well as more traditional Western understandings of Jesus as “The Way”, “The Suffering Servant”, and “Lord”. My favorite chapter is 5, “Jesus, the Guru” (P. 69). Here are some excerpts from that chapter:”The term guru is a common one in Indian languages. It has become common today even in other languages. It is used popularly to refer to a teacher. More properly, it refers to a guide. (P. 69) … Many Indian disciples of Jesus, whether Hindu or Christian, have considered him as their guru. Christians stress the uniqueness of Jesus by calling him sadguru (true guru). (P. 70) … [M]any Asians (Indians) who look on Jesus as a guru focus on his moral teachings, such as those compiled by Matthew in his Sermon on the Mount (Mt 5-7). (P. 73) … Jesus becomes the complete guru only with the resurrection. The disciples too acquire a fuller grasp of the teachings of Jesus when they look back at them in the light of the resurrection. (P. 74) … As a guru, Jesus is not merely guiding people toward personal fulfillment. He is launching and animating a global project that works for the fulfillment of all … and of the whole universe. … It embraces the whole of history till God is all in all (1 Cor 15:28). Jesus is therefore the guru of a cosmic movement that he initiates himself and perpetuates by choosing disciples and sending them to continue his mission.” (PP. 75, 76)My one problem with the book is chapter 10, “Jesus, the Dancer”. I just never have bought into the images of Jesus or the Father as dancing with us. I don’t like what is called liturgical dance and think it beneath the dignity of the Mass for a nun to be dancing up front while twirling white. Jesus walked about preaching, teaching, forgiving and healing the sick. And then he walked the path to Calvary and had His Feet nailed to a Cross. He calls us to pick up our crosses and follow Him though sometimes we may not wish to go where he leads us. (John 21: 18, 19)I understand that Fr. Amaladoss, S.J. is currently under investigation by the Congregation For The Doctrine Of The Faith. If there is anything in this book I missed or in his other writings that contradicts the mind of the Church, I cannot give assent to those ideas. I humbly submit to the Church.

⭐This is a look at the various Catholic theologies that have emerged in different Asian cultures. This book looks at how Christian belief interacts with and can be informed by Asian spiritual beliefs and religions, focusing mainly on India and South Asia (Jesus as Satyagraha, as Avatar, as Dancer, as Guru) but also with some time spent on East Asian Buddhism and Taoism (Jesus as the Way, Jesus as the Sage). The book was written by an Indian Jesuit who is at the forefront of developing modern Asian theologies. What I really liked was the focus on images and archetypes – while the author outlines these new visions of Jesus, the idea is that these can be left somewhat to the poetic imagination, just like more traditional views of Christ such as High King, High Priest, Liberator, etc.

⭐After finding out the the RCC “Inquisition” (I forget the current title of the so called “defenders of the faith” at the Vatican – its still the Inquisition, no matter how much they change the name). have the author under investigation, of course I had to get this book by him.And I’m not disappointed. The first two or three chapters, he is appeasing the higher-ups, but once you get through that, he reveals his true gift for sharing the truly “good news” about Jesus from different perspectives. Love it and love his work of love and service in the world. Too bad he has to put up with such nonsense from a bunch of guys who can’t hold a candle to him.

⭐Sure its not the regular European/ Western view of Jesus. But Jesus was never meant to be contained in the view of one culture. The Asian Jesus is exciting because it gives us a view of who Jesus is to other cultures. Jesus is universal, His love is for all. I’m glad I found this book and I am buying more to share with others. Thank you Father Amalados for sharing this side of Jesus with all of us.

⭐This is not the Faith handed on by the fishermen , this is not the faith proclaimed by the church for 2000 years for which million of martyrs shed their blood , this new religion never come to the simple mind of Ignatius DE Loyola , or all the Jesuit saint and Martyrs . call it post Christianity, new Christianity, reinvented Christianity . or a Christianity with the Jesus the Son Of God

⭐A fine book that helps me see Jesus thru the eyes of a totally different culture. It widens my appreciation of Jesus,

⭐A most insightful theologian. Christianity desperately needs a new restatement. This could be the beginning.

⭐Of particular interest for interfaith.Jesus the dancer is fascinating. Needs editing as repetitive but recommended. Can a non-believer follow Jesus?

⭐The eBook has all the words that are part of the book, but it lacks the pictures and doesn’t load the images that the book would have which greatly dimishes the experience of what the book was meant to do in the first place. One would have to search up the images in order to enjoy the visual aesthetics of the book on the eBook. All in all, a book that challenges the Christian imagination in the realm of intellectual and cultural spheres but greatly reduced to a scroll of intellectual ascent as opposed to full integration with the eBook medium.
