⭐Why am I reviewing an old — well, 1973. but that’s 45 years ago — book about the Brontes? Because this is one I have been attempting to find for over 30 years. I was not disappointed. Tom Winnifrith’s findings seem fresh and innovative, even in today’s era of Juliet Barker’s studies and ground-breaking enormous volume of a book, first issued in the U.S. in 1995 and a second edition revision in 2010. Winnifrith concentrated his scholarly attention on the social class hierarchy structure and its resultant snobbery; religion, and literary influences on the Bronte sisters, including the libraries they had access to in the 1820s, 30s and 40s. It was fascinating, and guess what, the book holds up all these many years later.However. . . . I just — had to get this out. On every other page Winnifrith pompously snorts about how other critics and biographers are “inaccurate” “inconsistent” “full of careless mistakes.” Well, you just take a look at the end-note pages of this volume. Either this man had no proof reader or he just didn’t care, because, oh boy, it’s so fraught with boo-boos that it’s laughable. Over and over, he keeps referring to Daphne du Maurier’s 1960 book The Infernal World of Branwell Bronte as “The Infernal Genius of Branwell Bronte”. I mean, duh. He kept confusing it, probably, with the 1967 Winnifred Gerin bio Charlotte Bronte: The Evolution of Genius. I wouldn’t have pasted such an annoyed reaction on if it hadn’t been for Winnifriths’s nit-pick picky picky tone through out the entire book, concerning everyone ELSE’S Bronte book. He just shouldn’t have been pointing fingers if he couldn’t get his end notes straight. I’ve been editing and end-noting academic papers for years. It matters. Readers do notice. And I know the correct title of the du Maurier; I own the book in its first printing and it’s certainly listed correctly in the Winnifrith volume’s bibliography — and even in some of the end-notes!
