On 6th September 2001 he goes to the Joint Intelligence Committee in Lndon with an alarming assessment on the threat from Islamic terrorists, which points to an imminent attack on the United States by students trained in Germany. As a result he is co-opted by the CIA to join a specially-constituted intelligence cell in Washington and they are on the verge of a breakthrough in their hi-tech Langley headquarters when news of the 9/11 attacks comes in. Pitt’s sense of professional failure turns to crushing personal grief when he discovers that his wife was one of the Twin Towers victims.For the next twelve months Pitt devotes himself to revenge. He persuades the Americans to recruit a former agent of the British, a Turk code-named Alexander working in Germany. While the Americans task Alexander for their own purposes Pitt uses him to pursue his personal agenda. Tracy Wildman, an FBI Special Agent, is Alexander’s handler and Pitt plays on her growing affection for him to use her as his conduit to the Turk as they progressively uncover a link between the American Oriental Bank based in New York, its CEO Sulaiman Quest, and the 9/11 terrorists. Alexander travels to Niger and discovers trafficking of yellowcake uranium ore to Iraq via Germany, and the first signs of conflict diamonds being flown into Germany from Liberia. Pitt persuades the Americans to ‘re-cycle’ the yellowcake intelligence to the British for them to use in the now infamous ‘September Dossier’, but they are forced to discard the evidence and abandon Alexander soon afterwards on finding that he is a member of the PKK. However by now Pitt has enough to link Sulaiman Quest personally to a sanctions busting operation and, more crucially, to direct funding of a terrorist cell in Hamburg. He also establishes that Quest traces his family roots to the village in Egypt from where the fundamentalist Sayyid Qutb launched his ‘Qutbist’ philosophy. Quest has embedded himself successfully in the USA – a radical Islamist at the heart of the American ‘establishment’.Pitt flies to the USA in early September 2002 and on Wednesday 11th he makes his way to the Brown Building in New York for an appointment with Sulaiman Quest, now an official advisor to the National Infrastructure Advisory Council. He confronts Quest at the point of a gun, and roped to his chair Quest is forced to watch on a laptop computer a video clip of Pitt’s wife jumping from the burning World Trade Centre. Quest is angrily unrepentant, but at this point Pitt tells him of the significance of the Brown Building – the former Asch Building and site of the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory where more than 140 innocent workers were forced to jump to their deaths in 1911, trapped by fire because of the failings of others. This is where Quest is to pay, on the anniversary of his crime.
