Description
The present volume begins with an account of what is known about the remotest geological ages and comprises chapters on the different kinds of evidence concerning man and his physical environment up to the end of the Predynastic Period in Egypt and the parallel stages of development in Mesopotamia, Persia, Anatolia, Palestine, Cyprus, Greece and the Islands. To trace the history of these very early times it is necessary to rely chiefly on material remains, since writing had not then been invented. The text offers a setting against which the cultural progress of the historical epoch can be viewed. Archaeological investigation may be expected to bring to light more evidence to fill some of the present gaps in our knowledge, but already it is clear that the gulf between historical and prehistorical times in much of the ancient world is narrower than was once supposed.

⭐I remember growing up and finding the Cambridge Ancient History set of books in my local library. As a 10 year old, they were amazing – even if I didn’t understand a lot of it.Now, being slightly older, I can really appreciate a book like this. Not only is this book (and the entire set) this amazing collection of history, but I’m blown away with the depth and breath within these pages. If these books weren’t so expensive, they deserve to be in every amateur historian’s home.Volume 1, Part 1 involves the history of the Near East from 3000 to 1750 BC/BCE. During that time, Egypt became unified and thus stable and created the environment to build the pyramids. Having been in Egypt earlier this year and at the Giza plateau, you go from shock and awe to How? and Why? This helped answer some of the questions I had. I’m still trying to work my way through the book. This book isn’t casual reading, but it’s a remarkable work. It’s fascinating but dry.The price of the books make this prohibitively expensive, but the used book prices might make this a tempting introduction to this amazing body of work. It’s worth it.
⭐The Cambridge Ancient History series is detailed and thorough – though they are also pricey. There are no other books that I am aware of that have this scope or depth of information. Even if I have some doubts about the chronology, I can always look here for specific data. I wish the latest information was in here. These were last updated in 1992.
⭐I bought this volume as a gift to add to my husbands collection. Anytime I can get a Cambridge Ancient History book that is used but in good condition, It is a great deal. My husband and I love these books as it is the best source for ancient history. This specific book was not in the best condition but the seller described it and priced it correctly. It was a great value for its condition.
⭐good book
⭐Lebanon has been settled for at least 20,000 yrs. A cave in China was found and shown to have been used for at least 40,000 yrs. The human race has a long and largely unknown history. We live in an exciting time, more archaeology is done every day. This book is an excellent background and starting point. The only way to add to it is to constantly read the academic journals, and would take all your time! It’s good to have one resource that summarizes basic, sound understanding in the field.
