Description
Jean Piaget (1896–1980) was listed among the 100 most important persons in the twentieth century by Time magazine, and his work – with its distinctive account of human development – has had a tremendous influence on a range of disciplines from philosophy to education, and notably in developmental psychology. The Cambridge Companion to Piaget provides a comprehensive introduction to different aspects of Piaget’s work in a manner that does not eschew engagement with the complexities of subjects or debates yet is accessible to upper-level undergraduate students. Each chapter is a specially commissioned essay written by an expert on the subject matter. Thus, the book will also be of interest to academic psychologists, educational psychologists, and philosophers.

⭐This is an exceptionally well-organized and presented overview of Piaget’s thinking and its genesis and evolution. Moreover, the rather lengthy three-part Introduction of this book is especially valuable for a person unfamiliar with Piaget’s work and the full scope of his innovations. Also, this book would be beneficial for persons intending to pursue Piaget’s own writings, because the book describes the problematic caliber of some English translations of certain of Piaget’s works, not to mention his somewhat opaque writing style in the original French versions. In several chapters, respective authors point out and correct particular ideas attributed to Piaget that have been seriously misrepresented, ostensibly because some critics/translators have themselves been misinformed.Regarding Piaget himself, his precocious synthesis of an enduring research strategy while still quite young amazed and impressed me. Additionally, the range of his interdisciplinary thinking and the originality of his resultant accomplishments truly surprised me. Although I had read another quite good account of Piaget’s ideas on development and learning, after reading this book I came away with an appreciably amplified regard for Piaget’s seminal thinking and its interdisciplinary elements. Furthermore, I believe that his genetic epistemology for a structural approach to the development and consolidation of knowledge can have relevance to engineering design methodologies. Here, I refer to potential contributions to reflective design methods as purposefully augmented or illuminated by certain of Piaget’s concepts.Of especial interest and value to me were the chapters entitled: Piaget’s Developmental Epistemology; Piaget on Equilibration; and Constructive Processes: Abstraction, Generalization, and Dialectic. In all, there is considerable terminology to discern and distinguish, but the exposition throughout is quite helpful and remarkably consistent in its use. Far more than once pass through this book is essential to attain even a modest grasp of Piaget’s ideas. But that is due to their range, novelty, and complexity, and not to the caliber of this book.In all, I believe the editing job, as well as the respective chapter authorships in general, are excellent. The notable cohesiveness of this book, however, would seem to be in part attributable to Piaget’s systematic research agenda and the convergence of its disparate results. Yes, this book provides a good first step for the uninitiated like myself in gaining a serious acquaintance with the richness and appeal of Piaget’s thinking, together with some insightful retrospective critiques by the chapter authors.
