Description

Richly illustrated with full-color images, this book is a comprehensive, up-to-date description of the planets, their moons, and recent exoplanet discoveries. This second edition of a now classic reference is brought up to date with fascinating new discoveries from 12 recent Solar System missions. Examples include water on the Moon, volcanism on Mercury’s previously unseen half, vast buried glaciers on Mars, geysers on Saturn’s moon Enceladus, lakes of hydrocarbons on Titan, encounter with asteroid Itokawa, and sample return from comet Wild 2. The book is further enhanced by hundreds of striking new images of the planets and moons. Written at an introductory level appropriate for undergraduate and high-school students, it provides fresh insights that appeal to anyone with an interest in planetary science. A website hosted by the author contains all the images in the book with an overview of their importance. A link to this can be found at www.cambridge.org/solarsystem.

User’s Reviews

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐Well, the book arrived too late for me to use for my online astronomy class’ final exam. It wasn’t as described in terms of jacket missing and that it was an older library book. At least the subject was about the cosmos so the content was relevant.Edited review because the pages are not marked up. The book is an excellent college level publication. For the latest planetary missions and astronomical discoveries, you need to do online research.

⭐This book is a delight to read–well-illustrated, well-organized, and written in a clear, easy-to-read style. Production quality is also excellent. It works well as a textbook to accompany Alex Filippenko’s 96-lecture video course “Understanding the Universe” published by the Teaching Company. It contains enough mathematical formulae to satisfy physics students but not so many as to discourage novices.

⭐The content of the book is interesting and informative. It’s written at a level that would be readable by most high school or college undergraduate students, but with a great deal of information.I’m thinking that this copy must have sat on a shelf somewhere for a few years. While it hasn’t happened yet, I think the binding will eventually crack.

⭐This book presents an excellent overview of our knowledge about the Solar System. The planets, their moons, asteroids and meteorites, Kuiper belt objects, and some information about exoplanets are presented. Many high-quality illustrations are present.

⭐A very thorough and enjoyable book for any one interested in the solar system. Understandable, colorful and many charts to help with the difficult informationl

⭐Perfect for an advanced college-level class.

⭐Very good book on subject.Well organized and written

⭐This book is filled with great information and a healthy dose of problematic and simply unnecessary anecdotes! Be careful if you intend to assign this textbook to students.

⭐I have had a life-long passion for astronomy which started in my childhood, especially for those worlds which collectively make up our solar system. What wouldn’t I have given to have this book back then. Kenneth R. Lang clearly loves his subject and presents it in a clear, well written form which makes for easy reading without ever being overbearing. Aimed at the serious student yet capable of expanding the knowledge of newcomers to the subject this is one book which should be on the bookshelves of anyone with an interest in our ‘home’ system. Very highly recommended!

⭐Another spot on Cambridge reference book. Remember to maintain your own updates if you need it for continuing use in ongoing astronomy.

⭐The book is proving to be a useful study guide. It was defined course reading matter.

⭐Excellent book a complete one

⭐Had 1st edition in paperback wanted this edition for many years as it is a fantastic book, could resist at this price!
