Description

A. C. Grayling’s lucid and stimulating books, based on the idea that philosophy should engage with the world and make itself useful, invariably cause discussion. The Challenge of Things joins earlier collections such as The Reason of Things and Thinking of Answers, collecting Grayling’s recent writings on the world in a time of war and conflict. In describing and exposing the dark side of things, he also explores ways out of the habits and prejudices of mind that would otherwise trap us forever in the deadly impasses of conflicts of all kinds. Whether he is writing about the First World War and its legacy, free speech, the advantages of an atheist prime minister or the role of science in the arts, his essays are always enlightening, enlivening, and hopeful.

User’s Reviews

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐Stimulates thought and challenges conventional thinking. I do not share the Author’s theological belief, but find much of his work stimulates and motivates me to contribute toward ‘tackling the hard problems’

⭐Great book. A philosophy staple that I’ll pass down to my children like a secular replacement for the bible. Getting books from Amazon seems to be satisfying more than any other product – seems like there’s no way of delivering a compromised product when it’s been printed and packaged elsewhere.

⭐A.C. Grayling does it again in this fine work of easy-to-read philosophy literature. One book I will keep to cherish. Great shipping.

⭐I was disappointed in this book

⭐A.C. always a favourite

⭐Iconic philosophers of our age.

⭐Good selection of thought provoking essays.

⭐Five stars for the first part which I had been totally overwhelmed by his insightful and foresightful analysis of worldly matters especially those on China, Oil, Bin Laden, and Drugs. Yet, three stars for the second where he returned to the traditional topics on philosophy such as Happiness, Success, Humanities and so on. Definitely eloquent, well written that manifested his mastery of words. In short, recommended!

⭐An excellent survey of the world’s affairs, cutting away the usual political language to go to things as they are.

⭐Trouble is Prof Grayling has deviated from academic dispassionate observation into left wing politics

⭐Thought provoking

⭐Grayling is one of those salient characters who stand head and shoulders above ordinary thinkers. A man who dignifies the title of philosopher. One whose life’s path has given him insights that can benefit all who would heed his wisdom. You don’t have to agree with every view he posits in order to reap a rich harvest of understanding, and the manifold subjects he addresses provide stimulation for any reader who likes to think.Especially now, in a dramatically changing world, we need writers like A C Grayling to provide what he does best: to tease out an issue and reveal something novel, something confronting, and almost always providing balance. If you haven’t yet read him, it’s high time.

⭐Any book of essays by A.C. Grayling is well worth the time. Each is stimulating and encourages fresh thinking about current issues. Frankly, more important than his more technical works of philosophy since these essays are more accessible to more people – and likely have a broader impact.
