User’s Reviews

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐This book does not have a complete table of contents and does not have a reference section. When you want to look up a topic, say Schopenhauer’s comments on the vanity of existence, there’s no reference to go to. And since many essays are not even listed in the table of contents you wind up spending a lot of time making it up yourself.

⭐I do love Schopenhauer, really, I do (reading his literary gifts to posterity, that is – and they are great gifts, indeed). But it’s honestly always depressing when I pick up this book and continue (though one can’t deny or argue with any of his beautifully put, fully sound points!). I do wish that his nihilistic truth turns out to be, someday, merely an anachronism. Alas even for today, though, it is uncanny how vividly relevant, and almost amplified in potency (perhaps by the weight of being basically prophetic), his words are (e.g. in regards to festivals, crowds, social delusions/jealousies, the futility of capitalistic obsessive pursuits and their inevitable accompanying hell-like ultimate emptiness, etc. etc.).EDIT: Oh, except–this goes without saying, but–for all the sexist comments / when the subject is women (or any other sort of ranking of people by physical traits; although, to his credit, I think his point was not at all to be suggesting how society really should operate/behave — moreso just his sardonic mockery of it witnessed from afar as a totally isolated observer). At those parts S. is unfortunately and unacceptably sexist, without a doubt — perhaps an affect of his latent homosexuality, if only in part? Not sure why he got that aspect so totally wrong — also, surely another contributing aspect would be simply himself *being* a function/product of its time. In fact, this edition warns the reader on the very first page of the book with a “we live in more enlightened times” disclaimer. I believe he has been quoted in his very late years, as rectifying his stance on women and claiming that it it absolutely possible for them to intellectually attain heights surpassing any man.

⭐This book should be required reading for every intelligent young man.You are not alone, even if your only friends are words in books. You won’t find a more comprehensive ‘book on life’ outside of the Bible; though admittedly, this is much more concise and straight forward.

⭐I’ve had a number of editions of the essays of Schopenhauer but this is, by far, the most complete, and it is an excellent edition with a great presentation and very readable print. I feel really fortunate to have found this collection.

⭐Good value, lots of Schopenhauer for very little money.

⭐this is effectvely an extended version of the penguin publication a sc.essays and aphorisms and therefore we can say the more schopenhauer the merrier because there is no philosopher more strong and optimistic than arthur schopenhauer what is morer optimistic than to tell the truth? ‘i am the idestructible diamond’ a schopenhauer.who is everyone trying to fool when they say that a schop.is a pessimist?by the book and sign up for the a schop.fan club, motto,’kick those liars out,and with a vengeance’
