Description

This volume presents Einstein’s writings from the final period of his work in Switzerland. Most of the material in Volume 4 documents Einstein’s search for a relativistic theory of gravitation, a search that ended in Berlin in the fall of 1915 with the completion of the general theory of relativity. Three scientific manuscripts, printed here for the first time, provide insight into Einstein’s efforts to generalize his original relativity theory into a theory of gravitation. The first is a review article on the special theory of relativity. The second consists of notes that document Einstein’s research on gravitation. The third manuscript contains calculations on the problem of the motion of the perihelion of Mercury. The explanation of the observed anomaly of this motion was to become one of the classical tests of general relativity. The existence of such a manuscript has not been known before now. All three of these manuscripts, along with other material in this volume, add significantly to our understanding of the creation of general relativity. This supplementary paperback volue presents only the English translations of non-English materials and is not intended for use without the original-language documentary edition.

User’s Reviews

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐This volume doesn’t have the unreadable, unformatted monospaced font that plagued the English translation of volume 2.One could probably do without the “definitive” (untranslated) edition that the publisher says must be bought in conjunction this.In other volumes, there were papers in the German edition not included in the English translation, but volume four has none of these. The translations lack the “editorial notes” that give a brief introduction/historical context to each group of papers (which in this case consist of 7 notes and ~55 pages) and the index (though the index only gives page numbers for the German originals, so it’s not particularly helpful for the English reader)…though perhaps most importantly, it lacks the publishers’ endnotes (which is somewhat ironic, as the notes are in English, but only included with the German text).

⭐There is no need to buy all the collected papers unless you want to do a historical approach. But before deciding which one to read, you could look at the following book: Kennedy, Robert E., A student’s guide to Einstein’s Major Papers. He leads me to buy the volumes 1-2-4-6 and 7 (only the English translation). That way, you can see how the evolution of Einstein’s works in the creation of his remarkable idea of General Relativity. It’s in this manner that I went through all the mathematical background of this theory. Of course, I strongly suggest buying the two following books: Misner-Thorne-Wheeler, Gravitation, Princeton and Zee, Einstein Gravity in a Nutshell, Princeton.you are now ready to months after months of very pleasant learning.
