Description
For deft plotting, riotous inventiveness, unforgettable characters, and language that brilliantly captures the lively rhythms of American speech, no American writer comes close to Mark Twain. This sparkling anthology covers the entire span of Twain’s inimitable yarn-spinning, from his early broad comedy to the biting satire of his later years.Every one of his sixty stories is here: ranging from the frontier humor of “The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County,” to the bitter vision of humankind in “The Man That Corrupted Hadleyburg,” to the delightful hilarity of “Is He Living or Is He Dead?” Surging with Twain’s ebullient wit and penetrating insight into the follies of human nature, this volume is a vibrant summation of the career of–in the words of H. L. Mencken–“the father of our national literature.”
User’s Reviews
Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:
⭐Great books and service!
⭐Mark Twain’s short stories vary from hilarious to ridiculous; they are not for the faint of heart. His underlying story morals are genuinely thought-provoking. Twain’s cynical leanings are evident, yet usually quite humorous – although they often tend toward the outrageous.
⭐Mark Twain (born Samuel Langhorne Clemens in Florida Missouri in 1835-died in 1910) is the greatest and best known American author. Twain wrote several novels; the greatest two are Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn. Many have read these classics in school but have not been introduced to the genius of Twain in the genre of the short story/tale tale. That omission is corrected in this marvelous collection of almost eight hundred pages. Included are such classics as “The Man Who Corrupted Hadleyburg”; “A Dog’s Tale:; “Was it Heave or Hell?” The dark apocalyptic vision of “The Mysterious Stranger”; The humorous gem “The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calevaras County: and many more. Twain’s targets are:1. Hypocrisy in all its many incarnations in the human animal2. Racial injustice in America .3. Unthinking belief in God4. Cruelty to animals5. Science at war with Faith. Twain was a master at fable, the tall tale and the ironical short story. Enrich yourself with this marvelous collection.
⭐Haven’t really gotten into this book so can’t give it a full 5 star rating….but, who doesn’t like Mark Twain and all his wit and humor so with that being said I just had to give it a 4 star rating on merit alone……it is the type of paperback that one would just pick up and read a chapter here and a chapter there….easy, enjoyable reading…not a novel, of course, as the book tells that….nice collection of this author’s brilliant and penetrating insight into human nature…I look forward to spending more time with this great novelist….
⭐Mark Twain is a deity. While not REALLY “complete”, this would be worth the price for An Extract from Captain Stormfield’s Visit to Heaven and The Man Who Corrupted Hadleyburg alone. “Captain Stormfield” is a hilarious depiction of what might actually happen in heaven that deflates all of the pomposity of man and Christianity of the time. The Man Who Corrupted Hadleyburg is another hilarious send up of the self righteous as one man sets out to revenge himself for a slight received there. Also notable for The Diary of Adam and Eve and his early The Notorious Jumping Frog. Also How I Edited and Agricultural Paper. I reread these stories over and over. This is a gift, as how could I to share such humor with friends?
⭐This hard copy book contains all of Twain’s short stories but the type is too small to comfortably read. I donated the book to my library and bought the ebook version.
⭐Mark Twain one of the finest American writers. His stories are very entertaining a must read American classics
⭐Is great
⭐I’d hoped for an enlightening and refreshing collection of witty and engaging stories but sadly these are dull and rambling, not at all what I was hoping for.
⭐Classic Americana
⭐I don’t think Mark Twain needs my review!!!
⭐Amusing but humour a bit dated.
⭐The man was a genius who set the bar high for the likes of Oscar Wilde et al.
