Description

This lucid and captivating book takes the reader back to the early history of all the sciences, starting from antiquity and ending roughly at the time of Newton — covering the period which can legitimately be called the “dawn” of the sciences. Each of the 24 chapters focuses on a particular and significant development in the evolution of science, and is connected in a coherent way to the others to yield a smooth, continuous narrative. The at-a-glance diagrams showing the “When” and “Where” give a brief summary of what was happening at the time, thereby providing the broader context of the scientific events highlighted in that chapter. Embellished with colourful photographs and illustrations, and “boxed” highlights scattered throughout the text, this book is a must-read for everyone interested in the history of science, and how it shaped our world today.

User’s Reviews

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐Thanu and Vasanthi Padmanabhan’s “The Dawn of Science” is an exciting cover-to-cover read of the history and origins of modern science, from ancient Athens, to the conception of the Indo-Arabic numerals, to Galileo and the age of Newton. To the layman with a strong interest in, but perhaps not a propensity for an academic or professional pursuit in STEM, “The Dawn of Science” is an easy and engaging read, that captivated me along the journey through the book’s 24 chapters. Don’t forget to spend some time looking at the engaging charts, visuals and graphics as well! All in all a 5-star publication.

⭐As a science historian and a budding theoretical physicist, I read this book with great satisfaction because I know that modern scientific ideas are best understood and remembered if their origins are appreciated. This helps us deal with the often compressed and jargon-filled way modern science is currently taught. Will our imaginations allow us to stand with Archimedes on a beach in ancient Greece the day he holds his stick and first excitedly scratches triangles within circles in the sand? If so, we’ll better appreciate the special relationships between triangles and circles that underlies so much of today’s mathematics.Knowing the history of discovery makes science come alive for us but, just as importantly, make us come alive for science. It can also teach us to intuitively make our own discoveries, the essence of what a scientist does. After Planck and Einstein’s discoveries in the early 1900’s, we stood at the dawn of modern physics. Today, after observation of the Higgs at CERN and gravitational waves at LIGO, we again stand at the edge of a new frontier of discovery. Will we participate in, or at least understand them? This book will help us do that because it is written by those making some of the advances in physics that may well become part of the essential history for the next generation and the spirit of discovery is vibrantly alive within it.

⭐This is a charming book that tells the story of science in a lucid and entertaining way. The many chapters of the book cover scientific thinking as it evolved in different parts of the world and illustrate the parallels between the modes of thinking. This is a book that is well recommended for the people curious to know the history of the world in many levels of detail. It also makes for a pleasant random romp through different epochs and different ideas.
