Description

These diaries cover the years 1910 to 1923, the year before Kafka’s death at the age of forty. They provide a penetrating look into life in Prague and into Kafka’s accounts of his dreams, his feelings for the father he worshipped and the woman he could not bring himself to marry, his sense of guilt, and his feelings of being an outcast. They offer an account of a life of almost unbearable intensity.

User’s Reviews

Editorial Reviews: Review “In Kafka we have before us the modern mind splendidly trained for the great game of pretending that the world it comprehends in sterilized sobriety is the only and ultimate reality there is—yet a mind living in sin with the soul of Abraham. Thus he knows two things at once, and both with equal assurance: that there is no God, and that there must be a God. It is the perspective of the curse: the intellect dreaming of its dream of absolute freedom, and the soul knowing of its terrible bondage.” —Erich Heller “It is likely that these journals will be regarded as one of [Kafka’s] major literary works; his life and personality were perfectly suited to the diary form, and in these pages he reveals what he customarily hid from the world.” —The New Yorker From the Inside Flap It is likely that these journals will be regarded as one of [Kafka’s] major literary works; his life and personality were perfectly suited to the diary form, and in these pages he reveals what he customarily hid from the world.” — New Yorker”What seems to hold [the diaries] together is a kind of ruthless honesty and self-awareness.” — New York TimesThough Franz Kafka is one of the greatest and most widely read and discussed authors of the twentieth century, and continues to be a tremendous influence on artists of our time, he remains an elusive figure, his life and work open to endless interpretation. These diaries reveal the essential Kafka behind the enigmatic artist. About the Author Franz Kafka was born in 1883 in Prague, where he lived most of his life. During his lifetime, he published only a few short stories, including “The Metamorphosis,” “The Judgment,” and “The Stoker.” He died in 1924, before completing any of his full-length novels. At the end of his life, Kafka asked his lifelong friend and literary executor Max Brod to burn all his unpublished work. Brod overrode those wishes. Read more

⭐nice read

⭐I read about 50-75 pages of Kafka’s diary today and I felt like I understood him deeply, even more, I felt we shared most of the adult symptoms of a dysfunctional childhood. Perhaps he is more self-censuring but only because his reproachments of himself are so ubiquitous here as to take over his life entirely.Tangentially, he mentions being in an almost constant state of fatigue or feelings of sickness. He also mentions an agonizing dilemma, or really, just his state of things, and that is that literature is so strongly the only sustenance that he has that he cannot afford to attempt anything else that may make him feel better, lest he end up with nothing at all.In reading, he pays attention most to secondary characters because he feels that he is one as well. An outsider, a cameo in some other, more vibrant and more living, center. That just completely sank me.This is an invaluable read and a companion piece to much of Kafka’s Literary works.

⭐This novel is very well preserved aside from the usual wear and tear. Amazing condition! Thank you very much!

⭐I’m only 60 pages in–this book is lonnnnnnng. But that’s okay, because what I have read is marvelous. I should have suspected, Kafka’s diaries would show a different side of his inventive nature. Whereas the stories are chiseled to perfection, here we find a miscellany, sketches, some repetitive drafts that are pretty entertaining even though it takes some investment. That’s really the bottom line–if you’ve read all the work he considered his literature, you don’t have to woe of your endpoint. Here we are.

⭐I relate to this man so much. To read his diaries is fascinating to me. Worth it if you have a melancholy temperament.

⭐This book is one that I pick at after I read a particularly nice short story by Kafka. Of course, since these are his diaries, these are not plot driven. But plots are not the only reason one might read a text. These are his raw insights that he never thought would be read by other humans. He had given explicit instructions to his closest friend to have his diaries and several of his unfinished manuscripts destroyed after his death. Now, realistically, if he actually wanted them destroyed, he would have done so himself–so this leaves one to speculate. Regardless, the entries provide a remarkable insight into the mind of a man who lived a very dreary life and experienced mostly angst and sorrow.

⭐I really like the design, but the paper quality is horrible. The copy I got has unevenly cut pages, and some of them are still stuck together.

⭐The condition of the book was great. I love the subject matter / themes, and that these were real diaries. But I’m not a depressed teen anymore who had the patience for such dense literature, so unfortunately I couldn’t finish it.

⭐Very good

⭐For a book, the ranking should mainly be based on content, but I would like to put emphasis on this book’s really bad condition/fabrication! Nevertheless, I am fine with it, but can not tolerate the fact that the company providing this book gets so much profit from it.

⭐Exceptional collection of Kafka’s diaries, you don’t have to finish them all at once; it’s better to go at whatever pace you’re comfortable with. Very glad that the book comes with intentional deckled edges, enough to make a book enthusiast happy.

⭐The product I received has deckle edged paper. Despite its rough and untidy appearance, it has superior paper and print quality.
