Description

THE DICTIONARY OF HUMAN GEOGRAPHY‘Even better than before, the Dictionary is an essential tool for all human geographers and over the years has provided an invaluable guide to the changing boundaries and content of the discipline. No-one can afford to be without this fifth edition.’ Linda McDowell, University of Oxford‘From explanations of core concepts and central debates to lucid discussions of the theories driving contemporary research, this is the best conceptual map to the creative and critical thinking that characterises contemporary human geography. The fifth edition belongs on the bookshelf of all serious students.’ Gerard Toal, Virginia Tech ‘With an exceptional balance between breadth and depth, this is undoubtedly a timely and ground-breaking revision of the Dictionary. An outstanding accomplishment of the editors and contributors, and a comprehensive and essential reference for any student or scholar interested in human geography.’ Mei-Po Kwan, Ohio State University ‘I can’t imagine life without it. Definitive, detailed yet accessible: there’s still no single-volume reference work in the field to rival it.’ Noel Castree, University of Manchester The Dictionary of Human Geography represents the definitive guide to issues and ideas, methods and theories in human geography. Now in its fifth edition, this ground-breaking text has been comprehensively revised to reflect the changing nature and practice of human geography and its rapidly developing connections with other fields. The major entries not only describe the development of concepts, contributions and debates in human geography, but also advance them. Shorter, definitional entries allow quick reference and coverage of the wider subject area. Changes to the fifth edition include entries from many new contributors at the forefront of developments in the field, and over 300 key terms appearing for the first time. It features a new consolidated bibliography along with a detailed index and systematic cross-referencing of headwords. The Dictionary of Human Geography continues to be the one guidebook no student, instructor or researcher in the field can afford to be without.

User’s Reviews

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐It is a big reference book! I wish it has a little more graphics in it, maps, diagrams, schemes, but it treats in great detail important topics of human geography, also it gives you a lot of references.

⭐excellent reading about geographical vocabulary. Recommended text for college course on geography and world issues. Excellent for any reader or college student.

⭐I don’t mind that a higher-level academic dictionary will occasionally have long articles discussing the debates of contentious topics, but it frequently dives right into the debates without actually providing a defining context for the term being debated. For a novice like myself, this means that I frequently end up understanding less about what the term means than when I started.I suspect that if you’re looking to purchase this book, you’re probably buying it for a class and so don’t have a choice to buy it based on the reviews. Just be warned that you’ll probably need to read some of the definitions several times, or look to outside sources just to understand what the text is even trying to say, let alone understand the arguments therein.

⭐Perfect for the learning geographer!

⭐Got this for a class. The entries rand from pedestrian to a self-indulgent treatise of an academic who wants to show off their esoteric knowledge rather than inform.

⭐Just get it!

⭐The absolute must for any human geography student – or any global studies student for that matter. If you want detailed and well written explanations about even the most obscure humanities terms – this is the first port of call. Very useful further reading and related topics discussion with each entry. Very quote-able. Was an expensive purchase for me but has become very valuable to me not only in my studies but just for general reference also. Writing this review in 2015 so there may be a new edition out…….

⭐I can’t count the number of times I’ve used this book for when I’m writing essays or just want to understand something a little more in depth – the definitions are long as hell but it’s great for when you don’t really get something in the lecture or you hear a term you’ve forgotten/needs advancing from A-levels.

⭐I bought this book as part of the recommended reading listed for my undergraduate geography course and it has been extremely helpful. It’s the only book I’ve lifted more than once to help in my understanding while writing an essay or revising for exams and although it doesn’t exactly put definitions in simple terms, it does give a lot of information. If this particular book is listed at all in any of your recommended reading lists, I would definitely recommend buying it. It always comes in handy.

⭐There’s no doubt the content of this publication is excellent. I’ve used it many times through the university library, but wanted to have it as an ebook on my iPad for handy reference. The kindle version doesn’t have hyperlinks between articles. So, for example, if I read “Public space” and see the link to “Habermas”, I need to then search for “Habermas”, whereas it would be so much easier to simply click on the word and link through to the article.Very poor show from the publisher – I certainly wouldn’t have bothered spending the £ on this had I known it was no better than a printed book.

⭐Very useful for university. It should be on all human geography student’s reading lists. The dictionary not only explains the content thoroughly, but also gives context, relates to other schools of thought/theories, and links well to the other literature.
