Description

Self-made millionaire Jay Gatsby epitomizes the decadence of the 1920s Jazz Age in this tale of mobility and decline, told with detached curiosity by his neighbor and confidant Nick Carraway. This new edition offers a selection of contemporary critical commentary on this classic American novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald. Also in this volume is an introductory essay by Yale literature professor Harold Bloom, a bibliography, a chronology of Fitzgerald’s life, and an index for quick reference.

User’s Reviews

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐The way this guy writes is something to behold. Like he sees things and gives life to things I would never think of. It was a tragedy as a story, but I still loved it because of how he wrote it. Also… I don’t think it has much to do with him personally, he is not that empty a person… I think it has more to do with how he views and understands others he has encountered in his life. He has a very perceptive point of view. I really enjoyed the book.

⭐…of all time. It very justifiably makes many top 10/20/100 lists for best novels, or “books that will change your your life”, etc. Even though it’s set in the Roaring 20s, its themes are timeless. It is such a universal story it and its characters can be analyzed using many forms of literary critical theory: everything from Reader Response Criticism to Deconstructive Criticism to Marxist Criticism to Psychoanalytic Criticism. It’s simply a timeless classic that every American absolutely must read, especially in light of the fact that it is so short (practically a novella). I hope generations to come enjoy it as much as I did and it continues to be as famous as it is!

⭐The Great Gatsby is ultimately a love story where the hero does not get the girl or live happily ever after. The hero is not heroic and neither is the object of his attention.Daisy is portrayed as being sweet and virtuous. Only to find out that Daisy absolutely hollow inside and as unworthy of love as Gatsby is unworthy of the material success that he thought would bring him his true love. The book is richly described about a time that is almost a hundred years ago. These are epic American characters who like Roaring Twenties are destined for destruction.

⭐I would give this a 3.5, not quite a 4. I liked the basis and the idea behind the novel. I enjoyed the story itself, all but two or three characters stand out to me. I’m not really sure I understand Daisy, she isn’t the woman I believed her to be.Jay Gatsby was quite the character, but I do wish there would have been a little more detail behind who he was, and what he did.I was a little confused by the role his father played in this book, that could have been slightly more detailed. All in all I do believe I would re-read this, to hopefully catch a few things that I may have missed. The willingness to re-read this should say enough about the book itself.

⭐This was an enthralling read that captured my attention. It was not as pacy or dramatic or as mysterious or even as revealing as I had expected but it was a brilliant insight into the inner workings of man and woman, touching on such topics and issues as marriage, honesty, honour and the classic: lost/found/forgotten and young love. Would recommend to anyone, at the very least you’ll sound a little sophisticated if anyone asks you what you’re reading…..

⭐This novel is a classic, placing the reader into the exciting and sordid lives of Gatsby, Nick, Daisy and others as well as the Roaring 1920’s and Long Island high society and New York City low life. This particular online book was VERY reasonably priced, but the last 4 paragraphs of the final Chapter 9 were missing. That was a disappointment, to say the least.

⭐This was an interesting read but not sure I would put it in the top 100. Maybe it’s me but I just don’t enjoy love stories. Maybe because I don’t have one.

⭐I don’t think I have to explain the genius of Fitzgerald. This is clearly one of the best American novels. However, this edition is not the best. The lack of page numbers bothers me for reference purposes. There are a few issues with capitalization and punctuation but for the price, I guess it’s not bad.

⭐A great classic story written very well displaying true writing prowess! Would recommend to anybody as the story itself is easy to follow and easy to get lost in!

I don’t really know how I feel about this book. I’ve never felt this before as I either like things or I don’t, however this i’m really confused!I thought I would buy it before I watched the film as I hate watching films without reading the books first. I struggled getting into this book but once I did it was quite a pleasant read. I know the underlying story is about rich people who have it all can still be miserable but I just struggled to follow the story.I would buy it however as it definitely isn’t a BAD book!

⭐Spedizione celere. Molto consigliato!
