Description

“The Great Wall of China” (“Beim Bau der Chinesischen Mauer”) is a short story written by Franz Kafka in 1917. It was not published until 1931, seven years after his death. Max Brod selected stories and published them in the collection “Beim Bau der Chinesischen Mauer”.Contained within the story is a parable that was separately published as “A Message from the Emperor” (“Eine kaiserliche Botschaft”) in 1919 in the collection “Ein Landarzt” (“A Country Doctor”). Some sub-themes of the story include why the wall was built piecemeal (in small sections in many different places), the relationship of the Chinese with the past and the present and the emperor’s imperceptible presence. The story is told in first person by an older man from a southern province. The first English translation by Willa and Edwin Muir was published by Martin Secker in London in 1933. It appeared in “The Great Wall of China. Stories and Reflections” (New York: Schocken Books, 1946).

User’s Reviews

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐This is quite an interesting book for committed fans of the Great Wall. The copy I received (second hand, via Amazon) was in good shape and matched the description. It covers the full extent of the Great Wall with good quality images made mostly in 1987-88. Not a travelogue, it is instead almost a fine art photography treatment of the wall. It has a section of text written by Luo Zhewen (translated into English) who is probably the most renowned Chinese scholar of the Great Wall. He died not so long ago. Worthwhile for people who know a bit about the wall, perhaps not the best choice for someone wanting basic introductory knowledge.

⭐Super short book I went through it in 20-30 minutes.I thought this book will cover the story of workers and how they went through hurdles to build the wall however the book is a mess. I could barely understand at times what the author was talking about. The topic keeps changing and I didn’t learn anything at the end. There are other short and sweet books that you can read I wouldn’t recommend this!

⭐Kafka summarizes brilliantly the running of past, present and future civilizations.Every sentence appears indispensable to the story. I highly recommend it.
