⭐This text was required for a course I took, and, unfortunately, it was useless. It told me nothing I didn’t already know, and it did not (in any way) help me in the course. Stick with a current copy of the MLA handbook.

⭐There are many things to like about this book, particularly the strong overview it provides of the skills needed by grad-level Lit students. The only negative—and it’s a BIG one—is that a significant number of the websites it refers to are WAY out of date. Many of the sites closed 15+ years ago. Had the sources been more current, I would definitely have given this book a 5-star rating.

⭐This is a really interesting and stimulating book for those embarking on literary research. My only criticism is the very annoying habit of including full references in brackets within the text. This has the unfortunate tendency of interfering with the flow of reading, making it feel quite disruptive at times. Why not use the academic convention of footnotes or endnotes instead? Isn’t this how an article, dissertation or thesis should be written anyway?

⭐I bought this to help when writing an essay for the OU Shakespeare module AA306. It was very useful but I only read the one relevant chapter. It is a set book for my MA in English and having read it right through this time I can only say that it is a most excellent book which does exactly what it says on the tin! And it is interesting to read.
