⭐Excellent investigation!
⭐A wonderful book full of great references and quotes to go and find on your own.
⭐Penelope Reed Doob gives us here a fascinating read, albeit on something that is rather a niche item, and not what the general reader will be clamouring for. Taking us from classical antiquity through to the Middle Ages, and thus also bringing Christianity into the story, so we have an in-depth look at labyrinths, both in art and in real mazes, but with an emphasis on literature.Although a complex subject and obviously not the simplest of reads this book does make for something thought provoking and also makes you look at certain things perhaps in a different way. As such we have two types of maze, the unicursal and the multicursal labyrinth, the former being one where there is only one way to go, the latter being a maze where there are dead ends and no clear path marked out to the end.Showing us these differences we can see that if you know your way around a multicursal labyrinth then to you it becomes unicursal, and for the idea in Christianity, if you follow the right path through the labyrinth of life you will in effect navigate yourself easily as you will be following the route of a unicursal labyrinth.Taking in various themes, ideas and formats this is nicely illustrated and contains footnotes, as well as appendices. As I have already mentioned this is not really something for most people, as generally the population at large will not have an interest in the subject. If you do have some curiosity when it comes to mazes though then you may find this to hold a wealth of information, and I must admit that I did find this a book that is hard to put down, despite its subject matter.
⭐very useful & enlightening extension to classical studies
