Description

The Iliad by HomerTranslated by Ian JohnstonComposed between 800 and 700 B.C., the Iliad tells the story of the Achilles and other warriors in the tenth year of the Trojan War. The poem tells of the famous quarrel between Agamemnon and Achilles and all that resulted, the extraordinary battlefield accomplishments of the world’s most famous warriors and the final encounter between the Trojan Prince Hector and Achilles. The Iliad is the oldest and finest epic poem in Western culture. This book contains a new translation by Canadian Professor Ian Johnston. It has been translated from the original Greek into a modern English poetic form and was designed first and foremost for those who will be reading Homer’s Iliad for the first time. Here, now, exists a new translation, faithful to Homer’s eloquent poetic rendition yet fully understandable by the general reader. Richer Resources Publications is proud to present this new translation by Ian Johnston. For anyone who has ever wanted to read these classics, but were backed off by older English translations, this translation and its companion text, the Odyssey, serve as an introduction to two of the greatest classics of all time. The translation remains very close to Homer’s text, yet the modern English idiom is extremely fluent and clear, with a rhythm well suited to the speaking voice. It’s no accident that this translation has formed the basis for dramatic presentations of the Iliad in Philadelphia and Oxford and was chosen by Naxos Audiobooks for its full-length recording of the poem (available in August 2006).A recording of the complete translation of this book is also available from Naxos Books. The Iliad, read by Anton Lesser (ISBN 9-626344-28-8) is available through the Naxos internet web site at: http://www.naxosaudiobooks.com

User’s Reviews

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐An absolute must read book for everyone. Tho I have to say that listening to it on a recorded book is even better since that was how it was originally presented.I assume there is no reason to recap the plot since it should be well known. But for a 3000 year old book it is remarkably readable in this day and age. Humans haven’t changed much in the interval.I will give away one spoiler–there is no Trojan Horse in the Illiad.

⭐Dear Amazon,Thank you for your confidence in me to rate “The Iliad” by Homer. Maybe after collecting Doctorates in Archaeology, Greek Literature, Sociology, and some I don’t know about, and create a work of literature that spans millennia I could comment. I think I will just play it safe and give it a 5. Be Well.

⭐Classic

⭐I am very glad that I was able to borrow this title for free through the Amazon Prime Kindle program.I am very disappointed in the translation. Yes, it is extremely easy to read but it is clunky and full of cliches and there is zero music in it. Some reviewers have written that Fitzgerald went too far for readability but Johnston leaves him in the dust. This really is Homer for middle school readers. Also the text is formatted so oddly on the Kindle that it becomes a terrible distraction. It is hard to explain but the last line in every 10-line section is spaced out with huge gaps between the words, giving them a strange and completely random emphasis. But if your goal is to just “get through” Homer and you can learn to ignore the odd formatting you may be happy with this. It is free to borrow and only $3.99 to buy.

⭐Very good exciting and poetic – I was studying it and found it illuminating, I even waxed lyrical about it myself!

⭐A good translation and works well in Kindle format. It is a good modern translation, but not too expensive. definitely value for money.

⭐It’s simple, intelligent, and appeals to contemporary sensibilities. It preserves the poetry and epic feel of the original, whilst retaining an appropriate structure and style.

⭐I am german and not a native speaker. The translation is far better readible for me than german translations. Also the content and the speeches by the respective warriors is structured very well. The best translation I ever noticed!
