User’s Reviews

Editorial Reviews: Review “This new edition of Terence D’Altroy’s The Incas is the most complete and authoritative account to date of this last, great empire of Pre-Columbian South America. It will stand for some time to come as the go-to book to consult for everything you ever wanted to know about the Incas — and what’s more, it’s an engaging, enlightening and exciting read!” – Gary Urton, Harvard University“D’Altroy’s expanded second edition incorporates the latest Inca scholarship along with additional topics of interest. It is a masterful work by a leading expert, accessible to students and professionals alike.” – Katharina Schreiber, University of California, Santa Barbara“A comprehensive overview of the Inca Empire. There is no other book that even comes close to matching Terence D’Altory’s scholarship and knowledge.” – Brian Bauer, University of Illinois – Chicago From the Inside Flap The Incas is a captivating exploration of the greatest civilization ever seen in the indigenous Americas. Seamlessly drawing on history, archaeology, and ethnography, the book investigates its extraordinary progress from a small Andean society in southern Peru to its rapid demise little more than a century later at the hands of the Spanish conquerors. This thoroughly updated edition integrates advances made in hundreds of new studies covering pre-imperial Inca society; the royal capital of Cuzco; the sacred landscape; royal estates including an extended discussion of Machu Picchu; provincial relations; the khipu information-recording technology; languages, time frames, gender relations, effects on human biology, and daily life.New to this edition is a fascinating investigation of Inca notions of life and death, space-time, causality, philosophy, knowledge, and human relations with non-human beings of the landscape. These insights shed light on how the Incas believed the world and cosmos worked and therefore how they could most effectively carve out their grand civilization. Covering Inca history, politics, economy, ideology, society, and military organization, this text balances information about the Cuzco heartland with the vast provincial regions, which took in lands from Colombia to central Chile, to provide a wide-ranging account. Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐I purchased this for a class at the University of MN and it will now be a permanent part of my collection. This is not a text. it is an incredibly thoughtful and detailed book on this culture through history. If you are studying South American cultures, you have to buy this book.

⭐The topics are really fascinating, but the book itself is very wordy and some of the concepts end up being repeated a few times, although in different contexts.

⭐How they achieved such advancements

⭐Shows pics of Macchu Pichu when it was found by Bingham! overgrown and derelict ! Gives great insite into how knowledgable Incas were!! Must see before you go to MP !

⭐I downloaded a sample of this book and all I got was the table of contents and a prologue. I have no more idea of the book now than before the download. I’ve been an Amazon prime member for many years. This was very disappointing. I learned more about the book from the reviews. I went to my Kindle unlimited and downloaded a book for free. I live in Ecuador now and was anxious to see a sample. I’ll be going back to the US for a few weeks and thought this would be good on the plane reading.

⭐I had been looking for a long time at a book to learn more about the Incas, and seen several contenders. This book beats them all in terms of knowledge, in terms of erudition, and in terms of attractiveness (it is very well written, with a clear and enjoyable style). I am looking forward to other books in this series.Be warned, though: this is a truly academic book, with a lot of references, but worth reading all in detail. Pity about the black and white pictures: I guess the publisher wanted to produce the book cheaply (which should not have been an issue with modern printers), but this did not do justice to the pictures presented by the author.Apart from this minor niggle, I loved the book. Enjoy!

Klare Kaufempfehlung meinerseits.Great book, well researched and written and very up to date in its approach to the subject. D’Altroy is one of the acknowledged experts in his field. A must for anyone who has more than a superficial interest in the Incas
