Description

This book is an introduction to the theory, practice, and implementation of the Lattice Boltzmann (LB) method, a powerful computational fluid dynamics method that is steadily gaining attention due to its simplicity, scalability, extensibility, and simple handling of complex geometries. The book contains chapters on the method’s background, fundamental theory, advanced extensions, and implementation. To aid beginners, the most essential paragraphs in each chapter are highlighted, and the introductory chapters on various LB topics are front-loaded with special “in a nutshell” sections that condense the chapter’s most important practical results. Together, these sections can be used to quickly get up and running with the method. Exercises are integrated throughout the text, and frequently asked questions about the method are dealt with in a special section at the beginning. In the book itself and through its web page, readers can find example codes showing how the LB method can be implemented efficiently on a variety of hardware platforms, including multi-core processors, clusters, and graphics processing units. Students and scientists learning and using the LB method will appreciate the wealth of clearly presented and structured information in this volume.

User’s Reviews

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐This book is very useful

⭐This is a the bible of LBM. The authors did a tremendous job of organizing and laying out the concepts including mathematical derivations. Feels like they took the pain and had a genuine intention of making the reader understand all the relevant concepts thoroughly. They did not cut corners anywhere or became lazy anywhere in the process. A tremendous text on LBM. My heartfelt thanks to the authors. Definitely deserves to be one of my favorite texts of all time.

⭐The content is great but the print quality is appalling! Almost every second page is grey and blurred, presumably due to contamination on the rollers? Really not great when you are trying to follow equations with subscripts etc…

⭐This is excellent book for grad. students and researcher who want to explore LBM (like myself) . I bought quite a few LBM books, most of them just presents a brief discussion on LBM concept and mostly focuses on coding script. In my opinion, this is the first book to offer detail LBM fundamentals. Thanks the authors to publish such great book.

⭐I access this book through university library. There are many LBM books out there, and I have perused many of them. This book was by far the most logically organized and easiest to follow for me – a graduate student who didn’t have extensive prior experience in computational hydrodynamics. The book covers a set of relevant LBM topics in a level akin to an introductory graduate level course, but written in a very enjoyable tone that helps specially if you are self-studying. If you come across something unclear at the first glance, you can pretty much count on the book to provide further explanations, examples, or references for further reading. It provides detailed explanations of the essentials you need to understand LBM. I specifically liked the organization of the book in terms of what the authors decided to include versus what they decided to leave out but refer to outside scientific literature. The book includes a set of carefully chosen literature when you are ready to move on to advanced implementations of LBM. Authors use notations that seem to be standard in the field, which helps when you read peer-reviewed articles. They also provide a range of example implementations of LBM for various architectures, which helped me get started using LBM for my graduate research. Also there are are very helpful tips for optimizing your code.

⭐Explains from A to Z including coding parts. Great thanks to the authors

⭐This is a very good book for learning LBM. I especially like the organization. It is a pretty thick book but it guides you well on the parts (chapters and sub-chapters) that you have to read based on your interest and level of familiarity on the method.

⭐Besides being packed with everything to get started with modern lattice boltzmann, this book is also a joy to read. The ordering of chapters is logical and it is written to be read – good explanations and motivations and thorough treatments of the underlying mathematics are no contradictions. It is also an excelent benchmark on how to write a book which is very self contained, demanding little to no previous knowledge of fluid/gas dynamics but does not leave out the details. What’s also great is, that they published all of the accompanying code examples on an online git repo (github in this case, but others would’ve also worked) alongside the Errata. One nitpick would be that I would’ve loved optional hints/solution drafts on the exercises, maybe also online, to further complement the self-containment. Although most of the ones I did are approachable and at a fair level, some hint would be nice when one just gets hard stuck on one – especially when the book is not red alongside regular studies or in the semester-break.If one wants to argue, one could debate what advanced topics to include in the last third of the book. Here they chose the field of Acoustics, of course treated with the same quality as the rest of the book. Other possibilities would have included porous media or more theoretical advanced collision operators like entropic LBM or cumulant LBM but the rest of the book equips one with enough tools to explore those on the own. So this is perfectly fine for me.All in all, I would wholeheartedly recommend this book to everyone in the lattice boltzmann field. From researchers interested to get into the theoretical world of LBM to computer scientists wanting to understand the basics as a foundation for new and fancy computational frameworks.Oh, and the price still being well in the two digit range is also very competitive for such a book!
