⭐I am a retired professor of mathematics who specialized in math logic – Elliott Mendelson was one of my thesis advisers. This book seems to offer very little that isn’t found in Mendelson’s highly regarded text in greater detail and less hand waving. The only section not found in Mendelson’s book is Hatcher’s last chapter on Categorical Algebra but this can be found elsewhere for example MacLane’s “Categories for the Working Mathematician.” I also prefer the discussion on the foundations of mathematics to be found in the less expensive Dover reprint of Kleene’s “Mathematical Logic” another fine textbook of logic. Finally there is Shoenfield’s “Mathematical Logic,” which can be ordered from the Association for Symbolic Logic. In an appendix Shoenfield gives the Higman proof, nicely streamlined, of the characterization of finitely generated subgroups of finitely presented groups. This is where I learned the proof and I highly recommend this text too. So, in conclusion, I do not recommend Hatcher’s book UNLESS IT IS THE ASSIGNED TEXT FOR SOME COURSE!
