Description
A richly imagined, remarkably written story of the woman who created Little Women—and how love changed her in ways she never expected. Countless readers have fallen in love with Little Women. But how could the author—who never had a romance—write so convincingly of love and heartbreak without experiencing it herself?Deftly mixing fact and fiction, Kelly O’Connor McNees returns to the summer of 1855, when vivacious Louisa is twenty-two and bursting with a desire to free herself from family and societal constraints so she can do what she loves most. Stuck in small-town New Hampshire, she meets Joseph Singer, and as she opens her heart, Louisa finds herself torn between a love that takes her by surprise and her dream of independence as a writer in Boston. The choice she must make comes with a steep price that she will pay for the rest of her life.

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:
⭐You don’t have to be an authority on “Little Women” to enjoy this book. While she wrote an interesting story, rich in factual foundation, McNees’ writing style fluctuated between smooth and rough. To be specific, her similes felt “forced” and uninspired. Characters were developed well enough, and the book had a satisfying ending.I learned a lot about Louisa May Alcott and her times from this book. Not sure that it would appeal to men ~
⭐I could not put this book down! I encountered many surprises regarding the people’s lives that Alcott based her “Little Women” characters – the true struggles they faced in real life. Passionate yet bittersweet. Leaves you aching regarding events in the real lives of these people and admiring their strength of character.
⭐I thought it was very well written and kept my interest reading it straight through. It felt like you were really reading what Louisa herself was writing and made me believe the story was true. Just such a sad story even with all her fame. Well done for a first novel!
⭐This book gave a “behind the scenes” look at the Alcott family, giving the reader insight into the characters Louisa developed in Little Women. It was a good read.
⭐Sentimental and old-fashioned but interesting enough that the reader must find out what happens next, all the time wondering if she would do the same. It is a wonderment how things have changed and not all for the better. Character and obligation over personal desire is definitely something of the past.
⭐This book covered a period of time in Alcott’s life that answered many questions about her . I loved the book.
⭐It’s impossible for me to give the review I want to without spoilers and I think it’s best enjoyed without any, and that’s from someone who often loves spoilers! I will confess to some shame in indulging a fictionalized tale of an author I adore, but I nonetheless found it a thoroughly enjoyable read.
⭐Just an amazing story on what might have happened if Louisa had followed her heart. I loved it.
⭐I have to say that at times it is a bit dull because the pace is too slow for my liking.Having said this, I loved how McNees fleshed out the Alcotts. While now it has become commonplace to see single female authors (not only Alcott but Dickinson and Austen too) as “poor spinsters” who wrote because they didn’t have anything better to do with their lives, this book embraces Alcott as a brave woman who wanted to be a writer from a very early age.
⭐
⭐A really nice and entertaining story, imagining a chapter in the life of the beloved author Louisa May Alcott. Ms. McNees has used plenty of factual information and built an imaginary story around it. Very interesting, and if you grew up loving Alcott’s stories about the March family, you’ll enjoy seeing a glimpse of the real family that inspired them.
