Description

The Mathematics of Change breaks open and breaks down the equation of midlife, proving balance is imaginary and change the only possible solution. The aching and terrible excitement of Carol’s affair with her graduate school professor has settled, fifteen years later, into the frustrated complacency of faculty wife responsibilities and motherhood.Carol wants more, but can’t have more. She can’t have as much, surely, as her best friend, the painfully enigmatic Mitch, who keeps their long-ago erotic relationship irritatingly compartmentalized and spends too much time in her secret lair of an engineering lab. She can’t have what the gorgeous new faculty member Abby has — a publishing career, slinky dresses, and a way of prying out vulnerable and damaging confessions from even causal acquaintances.Mitch knows Carol wants more, but she also knows it can’t come from her. She’s grappling with the terror that comes from knowing she could have everything. Her lab is on the verge of a breakthrough, and then there’s Reginald: warm, funny, British, impossibly long-distance, compelling. Except, she’s not really talking to Reginald, unless she can’t help it. Meanwhile, Carol is talking to her too much and desperately yanking their past out of the mothballs, and Abby’s primary scholarship seems to be predatory and tempting advances.Mitch could have more than she ever thought possible, but she can’t work out the math.A darkly witty debut novel from the recipient of the 2017 Al-Simak Award for Fiction from Arcturus and The Chicago Review of Books.

User’s Reviews

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐What a lovely read. I got so invested in the characters, I couldn’t put it down. So I finished it in one night. The characters are complicated and deep. I really identified with Mitch and her aversion to letting anyone get close and her fear of exposing any weakness. The ending was not quite what I expected, but satisfying nonetheless. I’m looking forward to reading more from Ms. Kabak.

⭐Mathematics of Change is a totally enjoyable book with great character development. The detailed writing allowed me to picture the locations and the characters — and even the weather. Of course, now I want to know what happens to them — typical situation for the end of a great book.Looking forward to reading from this author.

⭐Wonderful and descriptive story of women looking to find their place in their life and in their community. Character detail and background help make this story special.

⭐The characters are well written and very interesting. This is a contemporary novel full of lots to think about. The quotes at the beginning of each chapter make you stop and think. I can highly recommend this read.

⭐The Mathematics of Change is a story for contemporary times. Ms. Kabak’s strong female characters work through the results of choices they have made throughout their lives and the consequences that followed. The close friendship of Mitch and Carol is tested, and their story reflects what we all have lived through–the results of our choices in life. I look forward to reading future novels from such an insightful author.

⭐This book is a wonderful story that kept me engaged, invested in the characters, and wanting to turn the page to know what happens next. Anyone who has been in love, had their heart broken, or tried to start again can relate. The story so honest and genuine that you really feel how difficult it is to change, and walk away feeling that maybe you have the courage to change too.Kabak’s style blends captivating storytelling with anecdotes from her other life as a software architect bringing a richness and depth to every chapter.

⭐A great read about the choices women make throughout life and their consequences – both negative and positive. Funny, surprising and sometimes heart-breaking.

⭐Beautifully written, with strong, believable characters. Kabak has a wonderful ear for dialogue. She touches on aspects of the gender continuum that ring true in today’s complex world. Good read!
