Description

Colonel Katterfelto has lately returned to London. He departed America under something of a cloud … of smoke, issuing from his Spiritual Laboratory, which the townsfolk of Wormcast, Arizona, marched upon with their flaming torches. This catastrophic conflagration caused considerable concern to the pious colonel, who had been engaged in the creation of ‘Heaven’s last and best gift to Mankind’, The Mechanical Messiah. And he was, after all, being guided in this Great Work by holy angels, communicating to him through his monkey butler, Darwin. It is 1897, twelve years since The War of the Worlds and two since Worlds War Two*. The British Empire encompasses Mars, and an uneasy peace exists between the peoples of Venus, Jupiter and Earth. In London there are many marvels of the modern age to be experienced. Amongst these is The Electric Alhambra Music Hall, where crowds thrill to The Earl Grey Whistle Test, a musical extravaganza featuring such top turns as Hayward’s Acrobatic Kiwis, The Travelling Formbys and the newly-arrived Colonel Katterfelto’s Clockwork Minstrels. But all is far from well in old Whitechapel, where a monster is once more abroad in the night-time streets, committing hideous acts of murder. Can this be the return of Jack the Ripper, or has something altogether unearthly materialised to spread fear, panic and mayhem? Something Hellishly evil?Famed consulting detective Cameron Bell is already on the case, but it may take nothing less than the New Messiah Himself to save London, The Empire and all of the solar system from the impending apocalypse!’Stark raving genius’ Observer*See The Japanese Devil Fish Girl and other Unnatural Attractions.

User’s Reviews

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐A reasonable book but a bit silly in parts and I am getting tired of the whole steam punk theme that Rankin is following at the moment.

⭐This was my first foray into Rankin’s universes and I wasn’t disapointed (except that it eventually came to an end)!! I will definitly check out his other books!

⭐I was a great fan of Rankin’s ‘sprout’ series but this was a tired read, as if he’s just going through the motions. It’s either that or my taste has changed over the years. Whichever, the book hasn’t engaged me though I keep trudging along through it.

⭐As always, a joy to read a Robert Rankin book.

⭐This was a great book for a quick, entertaining read. Rankin is very clever and will be sure to make you smile.

⭐Once again Robert Rankin has produced a novel using his superb imagination and far fetched intuition. Each of his books, to me, is a masterpiece in its own right and how he can keep giving us these jewels time and time again, seemingly without effort, is simply staggering. ‘The Mechanical Messiah’ takes you through a torrent of bizarre events with uniquely eccentric characters and humour by the bucket load. A very rich book I can strongly recommend to all who like to relax their minds in mirth and fantasy. The concoction of a master.

⭐This is another great work from a great writer. A rip roaring boys own, thrill packed, adventure. But don’t just take my word for it, READ IT!

⭐The Mechanical Messiah and Other Marvels of the Modern Age – transports you by industrial revoluntionary devises of science fiction boffinery to a new world populated by well loved Victorian Dickensian characters both fiction and factual – thrown together in an adventure that is off this planet – to solve the mistery of life the universe and who zapped hurty finger!

⭐What can I say, if you love this author, you’ll love this book – A journey of thrills, puns, fantasy exploring. If you’ve not read Mr Rankin’s book’s – why not? Would recommmend

⭐Needed this book to complete the 3 so far written in this series. Have just read all 3 and it was all I hoped, and more! Robert Rankin discribes his genre as Far Fetched Fiction. It is fantasy, humour and total escapism! I now have every book he has written, so you can see that I am a bit of a fan. Met the author at a book signing last month, and he is just as eccentric as his stories. We need more larger than life characters in this increasingly mundane world.
