⭐ Review of Kindle editionPublication date: November 18, 2014Publisher: Atria BooksLanguage: EnglishASIN: B00L01GHAA236 pagesThis second collection of Sherlock Holmes stories was published in 1893 but the publication date is sometimes listed as 1894. The 12 stories in this collection appear in the same order as they were published in The Strand Magazine except that the first British edition did not include “The Adventure of the Cardboard Box”, though it was in the first U.S. edition. Later U.S. editions also omitted the story. Apparently Conan Doyle requested the omission. I haven’t found a conclusive reason for this but it may have been because the plot contains adultery which Conan Doyle may have felt to be unsuitable for children. Which, of course, begs the question of why he wrote and published it that way in the first place. This Atria edition of “The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes” contains the following :ContentsLetter from the EditorLetter from the AuthorAdventure I. Silver BlazeAdventure II. The Yellow FaceAdventure III. The Stock-Broker’s ClerkAdventure IV. The “Gloria Scott”Adventure V. The Musgrave RitualAdventure VI. The Reigate PuzzleAdventure VII. The Crooked ManAdventure VIII. The Resident PatientAdventure IX. The Greek InterpreterAdventure X. The Naval TreatyAdventure XI. The Final ProblemMap of Chaos ExcerptAbout Atria BooksIntroductory material by Judith CurrIntroductory material by Felix PalmaDoyle intended this to be the last collection of Holmes stories as he was already planning Holmes’ demise and exit from literature. He was persuaded to write what would have been the penultimate Holmes adventure, The “Hound of the Baskervilles”, before killing off Holmes in ‘The Final Problem.” As we now know, like the reported death of Mark Twain, the story of Holmes’ death was greatly exaggerated and Holmes returned in triumph never to leave us again as the world wide popularity of Sherlock Holmes appears likely to live on into the distant future.Note that Amazon has combined reviews of different editions of The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes. Also the Amazon listing of this Atria Books edition contains reviews which obviously pertain to other editions such as BBC and an edition annotated by Les Klinger.

⭐ Sherlock Holmes’s book collection was first collection I ever brought. I was 8 and I was already a huge fan of Sir Conan Doyle’s character. I kept collecting all versions of Sherlock’s adventures till this very day. This book gathers 11 short stories, including The Musgrave Ritual, one of my favorite adventures. An intriguing story about old ritual which leads us to one death and discovery of the ancient crown of kings of England. I like the way Doyle puts part of the history in every of his story. But most of all, I like the atmosphere the author is able to build around his plot and his characters, the reason why Sherlock Holmes’s adventures will always be my favorite read.

⭐ I picked this up to have a nice Kindle edition of this portion of the Holmes works. It’s nicely produced and formatted for the Kindle, and worth getting, particularly as long as the publisher continues to offer this special edition here on Amazon at zero cost.Be aware, though, that this is far from the complete Holmes stories. My recommendation for someone wanting a complete collection is to pick up this Kindle e-book: Sherlock Holmes: The Ultimate Collection . It’s selling for a modest 99 cents at the present time here on Amazon, and it has essentially everything (see my review for the details: http://www.amazon.com/review/R1XW9M0NM1AQSK/ref=cm_cr_rdp_perm?ie=UTF8&ASIN=B00DCD53C2).For reference, the following is a complete listing of the Holmes works, from the website sherlockian dot net.Sherlock Holmes appeared in a total of 60 stories, written by Arthur Conan Doyle and published between 1887 and 1927. ⭐ “The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes” is a really fine collection of short stories regarding the various adventures of the famous mythical detective. This, of course, are not all of the Sherlock Holmes stories. It is a series of short stories. They are very well written in the late British Victorian styles. There is no profanity or obscenity. Many of the stories are by clever. By necessity they are abbreviated versions of true police mystery investigations. However the style is excellent.I have been reading Sherlock Holmes mysteries in the order of publication. I have enjoyed every one of them. I suppose I should emphasize that I am a fan of British Victorian Literature. As police investigations they are seldom complete. It is the writing that I enjoy as much as the mysteries. In the event that one has heard of Professor Moriarty in regard to Sherlock Holmes, he does finally appear here in the last story, “The Final Problem”. I suppose I should also mention that I have found all of these stories on line at no cost. However for .99, I was very glad to have purchased this collection. I am reading and listening to a corresponding audiobook of Sherlock Holmes stories and am really enjoying he experience. In summary, I have really enjoyed this fine collection. These are stories that adults and children can enjoy. Each story can be read in one or two reasonably length sittings. I am really glad to have come across this collection. Thank You for taking the time to read this review.

⭐ The stories varied greatly. Some resembling Doyle’s early work, others more exciting. We finally meet Sherlock’s brother Minecraft and that was fun.The BEST one was the final story with Professor Moriarty. My only complaint is that the story was a very broad overview of what was otherwise a fascinating showdown between Sherlock and his ultimate enemy. It would have been so much better if we had received each nitty-gritty detail of their battle. In fact that final chapter should just be expanded into a full-blown novel and it would be absolutely amazing.I look forward to continuing my slow journey through the Sherlock Holmes collection.

⭐ My kindle book is not what I expected to say the least! It appears to have been translated from another language, possibly German. The sentence structure is all wrong for English and some of the words are translated in ways that are just silly! Instead of My dear Watson, it reads My pricey Watson! What a disappointment! Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was an Englishman for goodness sakes. I can’t believe a copy in English was not available.

⭐ This is a short collection (12 stories) of high quality Sherlock Holmes stories that are a pretty entertaining read. There is an additional short story at the end which is a fine story in itself, although not from Sir Arthur Conan Dole. This collection includes “The Final Problem” in which Holmes meets his nemesis, and perhaps, his end.

⭐ This a great collection of Sherlock Holmes short stories. It was a collection I had never read before except for The Final Problem which I had read before. I love seeing how everything plays out and what means Holmes employs to solve a case. I like seeing how Holmes’ s mind works and when he explains the solution how obvious it seems even though I couldn’t figure it out even if I wanted to. I love mysteries and Holmes is one of my favorite characters. In love the fact that because Holmes dies at the end of the final problem the fan outcry was so great that Doyle had to bring him back to life again for more adventures. Talk about loving a character, there are still to this societies devoted to Sherlock Holmes. He is even popular today with tv series in England and one in the US. That is a testament to the characters and stories that they have endured all this time and are going strong. So if you are a Holmes fan then you will like these stories if not they are a good place as any to start. Come on Watson the game is afoot.Papa Place

⭐ I’ve always been a fan of Sherlock Holmes and have collected all the published stories in several different formats. As formats go, there’s nothing special about this particular thin volume other than it was free at the time I added this to my Kindle. But if you’ve never read the actual Holmes stories, this isn’t the one to start with. Several of the mysteries are quite good, but not the best of the canon, and one does get a sense that Doyle was weary of writing about Holmes. This led to his penning the final story titled “The Final Problem” in which Doyle kills off Sherlock. Public demand required his resurrection and the stories that followed as well as the stories that precede this volume are better written and more interesting than this work. But, if you’ve read the other stories, then definitely add this one to your collection. It’s always fascinating to revisit 221B Baker Street anytime and best to do it in the hands of the master, rather than the many imitators that followed.

⭐ an enjoyable read, and at the cost of $0, hard to not get your money’s worth. i was a bit disappointed because i expected there to be clues as the story went along so that when the plots were revealed you would say “oh…THAT is what the old shoe was doing there.” This story doesnt work this way. You read some of the clues and then Holmes comes up with some bit of information not provided up to that point. In other words, I was expecting to be able to read along and figure out the twists along with the heroes. Instead, you get to read about how Holmes deduced the solution from a fact that was not previously provided in the story. Not a big deal to some, but I was expecting it to go differently. Still a good read.
