Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:
⭐Once upon a time, I ran into an Tenured Professor of English who taught me how to read poetry, for the first time, in my entire life. Will point out that one morning, the professor was so insistent that I “get” Keat’s “Ode to a Grecian Urn,” that I missed my Amtrak for work. But I did not mind, as that was the exact instant in my entire life that I did finally “get” how to read poetry. But you know, that education was exactly what I needed to fully join the western literature tradition.Afterward…..Then found this book, which has been a total feast of beautiful poetry. Not just full of poems, from throughout history, but also an excellent explanation, of what I have come to call the “architecture” of poetry.I take it on every business trip and just dig into it every night, for reading one poem, then it is light’s out……..I Love it, it’s the best. And your know, every day I read a poem out of this book, I quietly thank that English Professor, who is not part of my life anymore, for connecting me with an important and necessary part of life.Get the book, and learn to read poetry. It will improve your life in ways that you do not expect.
⭐Thankfully this book came in time for college classes! It was in perfect condition!
⭐I was worried about this class. Poetry is not my strong suit. I had passing experiences with poetry in grade school. My Professor was a wonderful teacher. One of those who truly lives the passage, there is no such thing as a stupid question. The combination of the right teacher and this book, I did well in poetry. I did better than I thought I would. When I can I will buy this book so I can visit it whenever I please. I do recommend this book whether you are a lover of poetry, a newbie to it, or you don’t see its value. You will be surprised. The history of the poets and the ingredients that go into making a poem are so apart of this book. It will help you to learn and understand.
⭐The quality of the book was a little bit worse than expected, even so I am satisfied with price and delivery.
⭐Purchased for a class. I loved this book. One of the things I loved about it was the fact that it had a large amount of poets represented here. It is a huge book. WIth over 2000 pages you can find a poet for any taste within. The books pages are thin so even though there are a lot of them it is not as heavy as some of my other large anthologies.Years after graduating college I still have this book on my shelves and my daughter loves to read from it from time to time.
⭐item was in good condition, with no writing on the pages
⭐Great reference material for serious writers.
⭐This is the first anthology I’ve had experience with (that I can remember) as an English major. It’s a textbook, so we read from it almost everyday. I like the collection and poems. The book’s cover is not hardback, so it’s easy to damage it and the pages are super thin so they’re easy to tear. They made the book this way to help bring it’s weight down, because if it were formatted like a normal textbook, it would weigh way more.
⭐Having used the Norton anthologies of both English and American literature extensively when I studied English in the early Nineties, I always liked the format, the annotations, the introductory articles and selection of works. Organisation chronologically rather than alphabetically I also find quite nice as poets of the same era are grouped together.Since poetry was my main interest back then, and still is, I thought I’d add this book to my collection as a nice one-volume canonical reference work of poetry in the English language. Also, the sheer number of poems makes it excellent value for money. The quality of print, binding and paper is still the same that I’d expect from Norton, made to survive a lot of academical leafing back and forth, and there is space enough for the odd note in the margin that one simply has to make on occasion if the book is used for intellectual pursuits rather than just reading for pure enjoyment.
⭐Amazing! It covers such a huge period of time that there is something for everybody in here. And when you’ve exhausted the bits that you think are “you”, then you start finding other things which are new and exciting and it can take you to all sorts of new places. It’s not a book for carrying round in your handbag, more of a huge doorstop, but I wouldn’t have it any other way.(and at almost 3,000 pages, it’s also very useful for getting rid of spiders…)Keep it by your bed, by your sofa, anywhere you might see it and think “I’ll just have a quick look”, and before you know it you’ll be hooked.
⭐This is a very fine anthology. The size means it has all the well-known pieces and some.OK, thin paper but how else get 2000 pages plus into a package you can hold. And even if a tad transparent, just reverse Herbert’s advice: a man that looks on glass, on it may stay his eye. The poems themselves are pleasantly set out, no crowding.Only off-key note is in the intro with remarks about ‘instructors’ OK for driving or for fire-arms. For Poetry, teachers please.
⭐The book itself is good/fine, no issues with qualityHowever, I hate that the poems are in date order and not alphabetical based on author? Annoying when I want to show someone a poem but idk the year it’s from (because I’m a normal person) and it takes me like 10 minutes to find it lol
⭐I had to purchase a copy for university, and let me tell you now, this is not a fun book to carry around, and that is despite the publisher’s attempts to reduce the weight of the book by printing it in ridiculous thin (and cheap looking) paper. Putting that practical issue aside, though, this collection really is exceptional in its breadth and it is a very useful learning tool. I wasn’t particularly fond of poetry until this anthology exposed me to some fantastic poems, which I continue to revisit.
