User’s Reviews

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐simply the most known and unknown genius of modern era. he left huge collection of drawings paintings, notes, projects, and yet we don’t have really clear where all his genius was coming from….perhaps an ET? Frankly he was superior to the human cleverness, still he was lost i the passion for the most known/unknown woman of ever, the Monna Lisa.

⭐Copious footnotes included within the text overwhelmed this work. I was hoping for the translated notes from Leonardo as he wrote them, with occasional drawings. No drawings are included, although they are described verbally. The notes have been sorted into an order the compiler thought meaningful, but I’d have been happier to see the random thoughts closer to the order Leonardo jotted them down, since to me that would also have provided a glimpse into his thinking patterns. I guess they’ve been sorted numerous times in the past and perhaps the original order isn’t available anymore. Having not read other compilations, I can’t say this version is better or worse, but I found it unsatisfying. It seemed there were more footnotes and explanations within the text than actual notes from Leonardo. It was as though someone found an ancient religious text and instead of just presenting a translated version for personal interpretation, rearranged all the verses and then interjected explanatory notes between every phrase. Since the added notes in this work are in the same text type as Leonardo’s words, it’s almost impossible to read for his words alone. There is no Table of Contents and perhaps this is just not an ideal work for the eBook format. While obviously, a tremendous amount of work went into this compilation and there is certainly value to a DaVinci scholar, for someone who just wants to get a flavor of his thoughts and perspectives in his own words, I found it too difficult a read to be rewarding.

⭐Great book and plenty of information on Da Vinci . It is a dover book set vol 1 and 2 .this was vol 1 .One of greatest thinkers of science and art . A true renaissance man . We can still learn so much from him and his thinking .his anatomical drawing are astounding for any time ,his drawings of heart and organs ,his understanding of water and observations of nature

⭐I have only skimmed these volumes so far, but it is fascinating to read such a clearly written english translation of Leonardo’s notes. The subject matter is wide and varied ranging from art techniques to philosophy and includes hints of Leonardo’s uncanny predictions for the future, especially his design suggestions for technology which wasn’t to be developed until over 400 years later, such as flying machines and the helicopter.Volumes 1 and 2 are both included in this one Kindle edition at a very reasonable price. The text is clearly set out under informative headings and the english translation is logical and easy to follow.I would recommend this book to anyone with an interest in art, art history, or the wider genius of the polymath who was Leonardo da Vinci.

⭐Leonardo’s many drawings and studies are too much to sum up in a review. Reading the studies of a man’s intelligence born out of imagination and observation is astonishing. A true genius to admire, take the time and read or browse through this.

⭐Another book by the master of the genre. This gives details about some of Leonardo’s greatest machines. I bumped this against some of the History Channels documentation, and you really do learn more from a book than television. For anyone studying mechanical engineering, this is a great thing to get used to reading. On my Kindle, it is a bit hard, but on a color iPad, with easier controls, it is easy. Read this and then go build some robots.

⭐I’m not sure what I expected from this – maybe a drawing or two, or at least some coherent text. Perhaps my expectations were wrong and this deserves more stars, but in any event the Kindle version is virtually unreadable. It starts with a long, incredibly boring preface written in the early 1800s. Then there are many many pages consiting of a table of contents which is so excessively detailed that it is no help at all. The table of contents has no hyperlinks, and the body of the book is formatted so strangely (cumbersomely) that it is impossible to find what you are looking for. The actual body of the book consists of paragraphs which do not seem to be connected to each other in any way. Yes I know this is the scrawlings from somebody’s notebook, but I supect the original notebook was more readable and made more sense. These seemingly unrelated paragraphs are interspersed with an excessive number of footnotes. This book primarily appears to be da Vinci writing down random things about art technique, either so he would remember later or as notes for teaching someone else. I suppose if you are an artist looking for artistic theory and techniques from a master you can probably find some good stuff here, but you will have to work so hard for it that it may kill your inspiration.

⭐This Dover edition reprints Jean Paul Richter’s 1883 translation of Da Vinci’s notebooks, and provides Richter’s transcription of Leonardo’s notes in Italian, in parallel with the translation to English, along with many Da Vinci drawings. The printing quality is very good. Note that Amazon is combining reviews of other, poorer quality reprints and Kindle editions of Da Vinci’s notebooks, into this page for the Dover edition. The Dover edition is not yet available on Kindle. For a good quality Kindle collection, see Thereza Wells (2008) edition of Irma A. Richter’s (1952) selection of Da Vinci’s notes, published by Oxford University Press.

⭐Dispite the fact that there are no illustrations this book give an insite to one of the greatest minds to ever live, just the fact that the notebooks exist is a revalation in its self. I once visited a stately home in Derbyshire just near Matlock where there was a orginal drawing hanging which if I so wished could have touched I was that close that was a moment in history for me so to actually find some notes by the him is also a moment in history only thing now to do is find a physical edition of this work, ok I don’t pretend to understand everything he is saying but then again I wonder does that matter for what you are holding is the closest thing to having a chat with him.

⭐I really enjoyed this book so very enlightening… such wonderful eye openers and new things to take on board…. much food for thought ……..

⭐Hard to read, but insightful for a look into the mind of a genius.

⭐FREE E-BOOKThis is a Free e-book on a subject in which I am interested. Therefore anything that has my interest and is free must deserve a 5 star rating even if I never get round to reading it.

⭐Its great to find that you can get most of the classics for free on the Kindle. I have been working my way through them. Lets hope the children of today will be tempted (because they are free) and will read them. 🙂
