Description

A continuation of Homer’s epic poem, Kazantzakis’s own Odyssey finds Odysseus once again leaving Ithaca on finding that the satisfactions of home and hearth are not as he remembered them. Following an encounter with the former Helen of Troy (now returned to her husband, the king of Sparta, after the ignominious defeat of the Trojans), Odysseus gradually wends his way to Egypt and southward, grappling all the while with questions about the nature of God. Considered by Kazantzakis himself to be one of his most important works, The Odyssey takes readers on a richly imagined quest for adventure and understanding with one of literature’s most timeless characters.

User’s Reviews

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐I found it a powerfully affecting work … potent in that I savor it slowly. I don’t know Greek so I can’t rate the translation, but FEELS great … I have been found unconsciously reading it out loud to myself so the words are accompanied by the musical qualities and it more fully percolates into my consciousness…

⭐I got about one third of the way through – to the point where Odysseus plots to steal Helen of Troy from his dear old friend, and put the book down for a while. He succeeds, of course, with Helen willing, and kills a few of his dear old friend’s faithful servants in the process. A different Odysseus entirely from the man in Homer’s Odyssey. Homer’s wily Odysseus gave us a hero bent on a noble mission, who works some unsavory deceptions on the way. Instead of a gallant hero, Kazantzakis gives us a demigod-like gangster – someone to avoid, not to admire. It’s as though some alien took over.Kazantzakis’ mastery of the ancient poetic form only intensifies my problems. Troubling as I found it, I picked the book up again and skipped to the final third in which Odysseus’ mind and physical reality blend in a quick, deathless, dreamlike montage. Even so, what’s to love? Psychadelia by itself holds little attraction.

⭐Good cost and quick shipping

⭐Whether you’ve read Homer or not, this is perhaps as magnificent an Odyssey as you’ll find. i Sequel may keep you reading it over and over. Its rich, lusty, sensuous, and poetic earthiness and magnificent poetry is captivating. The edition came as promised and in good shape. It’s a book that won’t ever leave my library, and one I’ll return to several times over just be enraptured by it’s beauty and exploration of what it is to be a flesh and blood human.

⭐This new version of the Odyssey is surprising and interesting. Read it slowly after you have read the original Odyssey

⭐The Odyssey : A Modern SequelThis book is incredibly well done. Kazantzakis’ use of metaphor is the best that I have ever seen.If I may say so without risk, I honestly believe that this is actually much better than the original one by Homer. And to top it off it is also quite humorous!

⭐Arrived quickly and in good shape. Wow, this is longer than the Iliad and the Odyssey combined. The poetry, the passion are overwhelming. Unfortunately, I can’t quite warm up to the poem because everyone, including Ulysses himself, is a creep.

⭐The reason my rating wasn’t higher was because it wasn’t a first edition, as I thought it was

⭐ok

⭐This is another of Kazantzakis great books on historical figures, starting with novels about the prediction of Jesus’ behaviour on the cross. St Francis of Assisi is a strong character and the book outlines his life and the times in which he lived. A good read from Greece’s famous author..

⭐Ho acquistato questo libro usato perchè quasi introvabile; l’immensa poesia di Kazantzakis purtroppo ancora non ha trovato una traduzione italiana, se non per qualche capitolo…. Libro in ottime condizioni, molto soddisfatto dell’acquisto!Superb. Excellent. Delighted to have this rarity

⭐You should read this book difficult to get a cheap paperback version but worth getting the hardback, i shall be soon
