Description

Set in a small, remote community in rural Tennessee in the years between the two world wars, The Orchard Keeper is an early classic from one of America’s finest and most celebrated authors. It tells of John Wesley Rattner, a young boy, and Marion Sylder, an outlaw and bootlegger who, unbeknownst to either of them, has killed the boy’s father. Cormac McCarthy’s debut novel is a magnificent evocation of an American landscape, and of a lost American time.

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐McCarthy’s lyrical prose and his ability to capture the essence of existence without turning preachy or maudlin or melodramatic is awe inspiring. While this is not my favorite of his books, it is one of my favorite books. A coming of age story, a story of rebellion, and a story of madness. Trying to put your finger on the thread of the plot and say it’s an xxx story just isn’t possible for me with McCarthy. These are human stories about characters sewn from whole cloth, all of them on trajectories of varying levels of loss, love, rage, all of the things that make us human. McCarthy creates beautifully turned phrases and characters that you loathe or love, there is no middle ground. He makes no attempt to pretty up the ugly or demean the pretty. If you haven’t read McCarthy you should. You won’t have a ho-hum reaction to any of his novels.

⭐This is certainly one of our great American novels, and it might be the best “first” novel written in our country in the past 100 years. In many respects the America McCarthy reveals in The Orchard Keeper is one our politicians and rich folks like to pretend never existed, that back-woods land of poor country people living hard-scrabble lives in the hills that many of our folks grew up in at the end of The Great Depression. Forget Faulkner, for God’s sake. Cormac writes beautiful prose that actually makes sense, and his novels are peopled with characters who are as real as anyone you’ll meet in your travels today. This is the real deal. And you’ll always find something new and refreshing in this wonderful book, each time you go back to read it again.

⭐I started reading McCarthy with “The Border Trilogy” and next “The Road.” I was pleased to find his early novels available and am reading them starting with the first, “The Orchard Keeper.” His language is what draws me. Even as dark as his writing is, how he expresses things is a magnet to me. This is a wonderful slice of life and you can see some trends that he follows in books written decades later. Very worthy reading. His mastery of scene and dialect is marvelous.

⭐I am a fan of Cormac McCarthy and have read four of his other books, all of which I enjoyed more than this one. In truth, The Orchard Keeper was difficult for me to follow and I caught myself flipping back constantly to see if there was something I missed – some clue or indication of where I was at or where the story was going. It was just to much of a chore to read four or five pages into a chapter before I even knew which characters I was reading about or where in the story this particular chapter fit. My general feeling is that if you are a fan of the author, it’s worth the effort. But as a casual read or someone unfamiliar with his work, you might want to save this one for later.

⭐Though it took me many years to get around to, this is the last Cormac McCarthy book I saved, strangely his first. It’s great, but more so really cool to see how he’s gone from this to Blood Meridian to All The Pretty Horses and The Road. For the McCarthy fans for sure.

⭐Growing up in the hills of East Tennessee, McCarthy took me back to my childhood. Jobs were scare and a lot of people made “shine” simply to eat. Growing up my stepfather had a good job at Alcoa and there was no moonshining in my family, but everyone wasn’t so lucky. The characters in the book are right on. The car brought back vivid memories of seeing the same model car coming by our house. It came out of Western North Carolina and the back of the car wasn’t very high off the pavement. We all knew it was loaded with moonshine. It was simply a way to make a living. After WW2, our veterans returning from Europe and the Pacific went North to Illinios and Michigan to work, and the age of “moonshining” was not as prolific. So I said that to say this: if you didn’t like the book, it’s because you didn’t understand what it was like here in the “good old days”. McCarthy captured the time, the people and the area with his GENIUS.

⭐McCarthy is nothing less than a literary genius!

⭐If you are looking for a book with a fascinating plot full of crime and compassion, and seems to come directly out of the culture of the rough and rugged Old South, this book is for you. McCarthy’s talent is evident in his dry and susinct writing style that perfectly fits the mood of the novel. Normally first novels leave you wanting something more, but not The Orchard Keeper. Highly Recommended!

⭐I’ve read most of McCarthy’s novels now and I didn’t really enjoy this one too much. Great prose as usual but there was a lack of a consistent storyline and I was never gripped by it as I was was by the Border Trilogy and No Country For Old Men. I found it a bit confusing with the lack of a consistent thread and it didn’t really flow very well for me.The prose was exceptionally descriptive and I can understand why many readers have given it 5 stars but personally I prefer a stronger story line.

⭐I have now read all of Cormac Mccarthy’s novels coming to this one last. I enjoyed every single one of his books for the reasons that other reviewers give but found this less enjoyable to read. It darts about in time and place in a disjointed way so that the reader never knows quite where you are with the story and which character is featuring in the short sections that he uses. Since this was his first novel, maybe he was trying to impress with literary techniques? I would recommend any other of his books but those new to his writing should maybe start with one of the others.

⭐I am currently trying to read all of Cormac McCarthy’s books. This was the hardest read so far.Set in Tennessee, post Prohibition 20th Century. Some beautiful passages but often uses overly complex or archaic word choices making it a slow read until you are used to the style. Not as good as The Road or Blood Meridian.

⭐Disappointing read especially as I’ve enjoyed everything else by McCarthy. Difficult to grasp what’s going on, no central character, no feel of purpose. The prose is still wonderful but not enough to lift a rudderless novel.

⭐I love Cormac McCarthy’s books. I have nearly read them all, and I do not fully understand any of them so I am looking forward to the second reading!
