Description

An essential reader containing 19 important papers on the invention and early development of concurrent programming and its relevance to computer science and computer engineering. All of them are written by the pioneers in concurrent programming, including Brinch Hansen himself, and have introductions added that summarize the papers and put them in perspective. The editor provides an overview chapter and neatly places all developments in perspective with chapter introductions and expository apparatus. Essential resource for graduates, professionals, and researchers in CS with an interest in concurrent programming principles. A familiarity with operating system principles is assumed.

User’s Reviews

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐This is a collection of classic, even seminal, papers on concurrency and concurrent programming, mostly by Per Brinch Hansen, with a few from Edsger W. Dijkstra and C.A.R. “Tony”Hoare, dating back to at least 1965. They include Dijkstra’s “Cooperating Sequential Processes”, which first explored semaphores and their use in solving mutual exclusion problems, as well as the better-known “Structure of the T.H.E. Multiprogramming System”, which laid down the concepts of layered design, Tony Hoare’s “Monitors” and “Communicating Sequential Processes” papers, Brinch Hansen’s RC4000 work and his later Concurrent Pascal and Solo work. These papers are every bit as important today as they were when they were written, possibly more so. Brinch Hansen’s work has historically not gotten as much airplay as it deserved, and his later work seems almost unknown. They are a genuine pleasure to read, as much as fifty years later.
