User’s Reviews
Editorial Reviews: Review “Worthwhile reading … for anyone reckoning him or herself to be part of the analytic tradition. Superb in coming to grips with one’s methodological self-understanding.” Metapsychology From the Inside Flap The standard narratives of the development of philosophy over the past century are increasingly inadequate, yet it remains unclear what should replace them. The Philosophy of Philosophy provides an original and provocative take on the nature and methodology of philosophy. Pre-eminent contemporary philosopher Timothy Williamson rejects the ideology of the most distinctive trend of 20th century philosophy—the ‘linguistic turn’. He describes the method of philosophy as evolving from non-philosophical ways of thinking and proposes a fresh understanding of both contemporary and past philosophers. This marks the second volume in the Blackwell/Brown Lectures in Philosophy series, offering compact books with cutting-edge research from across the discipline. Based on public lectures held at Brown University, the books in this series are written by established scholars of the highest caliber, presenting their work in a clear and concise format. Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:
⭐An interesting, but in the end rather frustratingly ‘indirect’ and hence opaque, discussion of the extent to which philosophical inquiries are “armchair” investigations. But i found it a useful read — but then it is my trade.
⭐Excellent
⭐Williamson helps motivate a new self-conception for philosophers but in a very unguided fashion. The overall feeling I had was that Williamson is pushing towards something very interesting, but that he hasn’t taken the time to collect his thoughts clearly. Any rebuttal of Williamson could not hope to address his position systematically. The only response possible to Williamson would be a point by point discussion of all of what appear to be judgments that are united in spirit but whose connection is only hinted at. This strikes me as a weakness of the book. Perhaps, as the other reviewer said, it is simply for specialists. Or perhaps what is more properly said is that a specialist would have the experience to untangle the conceptual mess. My impression: Williamson is being much more opaque than necessary. A good read for anyone who is worried about the legitimacy of the field of philosophy, but be ready to skim past large sections that seem peripheral to the larger issue.
⭐I felt this book was too difficult of a read for a layman. I was a philosophy major in college but still found it pretty tough to read. Definitely targeted at a very academic philosophy crowd.
⭐Currently waiting on volume 3, the philosophy of philosophy of philosophy.
Bel libro ed originaleIs it possible to trace a theory of what philosophy is and should be without any sort of historical awareness of what philosophy has been (and has believed to be) in more or less recent history? is it possible to trace such a theory without any sort of knowledge concerning non-analytical philosophy? the author believes it is, in both cases. The result is an intelligent and well written, but definitely disappointing bookTimothy Williamson describes what is relevant (which methods) for philosophy. He takes well known principles, like the sentence of excluded middle into account as well, as he mention the significance of a common sence, when doing philosophy. In his view philosophy is like an armchair-technology like mathematics. And he requires to use mathematical methods in philosophy, where possible. Sometimes descriptions are too long and some compactness and sharpness is missing.
