⭐アメリカ・コロンビア大学の教授職を務め、伝統占星術ならびに占星術史関連図書の脚注・参考文献リストにも頻出の人物であります歴史学者リン・ソーンダイク（1882-1965）の処女作（初版：1905あるいは1910年）の原物を複写・再生させた復刻版で2012年刊。レヴュアー所持本だけかもしれませんが印字が潰れたり一部が空白だったりする頁がいくつかありますが廉価でいにしえの知識に触れ得るという意味では大きな支障はないでしょう。欧州の知識の歴史における魔術のありかを探るうえで、バビロニア・ギリシャ・ヘレニズムなど様々な思想・知識がまとまり収束しつつあった古代ローマ帝国での魔術（=宇宙論、植物を用いる医療、隠避学、夢見、占星術…）を研究することが鍵であると考える著者がピタゴラス、プラトンなどローマ世界での知とダンテ、マイケル・スコットなど中世世界の知との間に連続性をみいだそうとする試みの書。ここで著者が述べる魔術とは科学（レヴュアーいわく、今日での「科学」とは異なる）教育を受けている人々にのみ受け入れられる学びと関わるものを指すようです。第3章「プリニウスの博物誌」は著者が上述試みの手掛かりと考えるプリニウス著『博物誌』で魔術や占星術がどのように扱われているかが検証されています。第5章「帝国での魔術への信仰」ではプトレマイオスの占星術､第6章「魔術への批判」ではキケロなどによる占星術批判などが論じられています。ちなみに著者は36頁で上記「欧州の知識の歴史」での魔術を総て網羅しようという試みは本書の手に余るとなさっていますが、上記参考文献リストに頻出する大著『魔術と経験科学の歴史（The History of Magic and Experiment Science）』（全8巻､1923～1958年）でその試みはのちに結実されたのかもしれません。
