Description

Jerome McGann takes his readers on a spirited tour through a wide range of Poe’s verse as well as the critical and theoretical writings in which he laid out his arresting ideas about poetry and poetics. In a bold reassessment, McGann argues that Poe belongs alongside Whitman and Dickinson as a foundational American poet and cultural presence.

⭐This is a blessed book! By the word BLESSED I am not implying something religious but rather emphasizing the need for many decades of a redemption of Poe’s IDENTITY as an American Poet, an essential American Poet. My involvement with poetry as both a reader and later a writerbegan when I was 14 and entirely on my own set about reading and comprehending Poe’s THE RAVEN. I read it many times, took notes and wrote my sincere if inadequate paraphrase/interpretation. A year later I read the Philosophy of Composition with the same diligence. I owe to Poe the kind of sensitive, unbiased, sympathetic reading that Jerome McGann has provided in this luminous book. Having read it, you will never be able to reduce Poe to a stumbling, uninspired poet. Professor McGann takes us through the external influences and achievements of Poe, and reveals to us his unique poetic gift, that is represented by the subtitle ALIEN ANGEL. Does Poe belong with Emily Dickinson and Walt Whitman as the Key American Poets? I am not persuaded of that, and I consider it irrelevant. McGann’s book gives Poe his place of Being in American poetry, and it is enough to restore the identity which meant the most to him, and now to us who have been enlightened, namely, The Poet Edgar Allan Poe.

⭐The book is a wonderful re-evaluation of Poe’s works by a reknown scholar. The book was received faster than promised and in excellent condition.

⭐This is an excellent critique of Edgar Allan Poe’s poetry and seeks to rightly place him in the pantheon of modern poets with Rimbaud, Hart Crane, and Baudelaire. You need to be familiar with Poe’s work, since the author expects this. This book made my Christmas, and gave me a much better understanding of the poet.

⭐Anyone who doesn’t take Poe the poet seriously should read this book. It will make you think again.
