Description

In his monumental 1687 work, Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica, known familiarly as the Principia, Isaac Newton laid out in mathematical terms the principles of time, force, and motion that have guided the development of modern physical science. Even after more than three centuries and the revolutions of Einsteinian relativity and quantum mechanics, Newtonian physics continues to account for many of the phenomena of the observed world, and Newtonian celestial dynamics is used to determine the orbits of our space vehicles. This authoritative, modern translation by I. Bernard Cohen and Anne Whitman, the first in more than 285 years, is based on the 1726 edition, the final revised version approved by Newton; it includes extracts from the earlier editions, corrects errors found in earlier versions, and replaces archaic English with contemporary prose and up-to-date mathematical forms. Newton’s principles describe acceleration, deceleration, and inertial movement; fluid dynamics; and the motions of the earth, moon, planets, and comets. A great work in itself, the Principia also revolutionized the methods of scientific investigation. It set forth the fundamental three laws of motion and the law of universal gravity, the physical principles that account for the Copernican system of the world as emended by Kepler, thus effectively ending controversy concerning the Copernican planetary system. The translation-only edition of this preeminent work is truly accessible for today’s scientists, scholars, and students.

User’s Reviews

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐The description was quite a bit off. Listed as “Good,” it warned about “shows signs of wear,” but it looks brand spankin’ new to me. There are two teeny-tiny little creases on the corners, but books are like that in the store. In any case, this was the best price and probably the best condition too. This book has been on my list for months, and I’m glad I waited.

⭐Learning the history of physics.

⭐We are in 1687, Newton just climbed Euclid’s shoulder to show us how bodies move using geometry (nothing sexy, though). The show starts with three axioms also called “the laws of motion”. From these three, he goes building a tight knitted set of theorems about bodies interacting with each other through invisible forces. The whole thing is of course demonstrated using geometric proofs. SEVERAL abstract arguments; i.e. tons of ratios including the inverse square law (gravity). He often tries to avoid the tedious ad absurdum proofs from ancient geometers like Euclid but he is still very tedious (his own words). Sometimes he makes references to Galileo’s experiments but he did many himself (e.g. pendulums oscillating in air, water and quicksilver). It took me a few years to gather the courage to finish books 1 and 2 (this translation is far better). Then comes book 3 entitled “system of worlds” where he applies his constructions to our solar system. He was particularly obsessed with the moon and comets (including their tails). Takeaway: since he is demonstrating everything, this is quite different from the digested mechanics we learn at school. You better come with your intrepid persistence against this book.

⭐Nothing at all is wrong with the purchase.

⭐Exactly what I wanted. The book has amazing quality pages and covers, the material is phenomenal, well worth the price. Belongs on any intellectual’s bookshelf or mathematician’s bed.

⭐I appreciated the inclusion of the history of the principia. I found the font to be legible and neatly printed. My only complaints about the book are that some of the drawings aren’t exactly proportional and the lack of current geometric notation. (I feet that the use of current notation is necessary to help understand the diagrams.)

⭐very interesting book

⭐No scientist’s library is complete until he has this book. Newton opened the door to modern thinking for us. It’s a great book.

⭐A great deal of scholarship has gone into this version ‘ in a way similar to the remix of the White’ album by Giles Martin it goes back to the original texts to capture newton’s way of expressing himself while being totally modern in the mathematical expressions. What’s not to like?!!

⭐Bought as a gift for a PhD student in Physics so I can only gauge their reaction which was very positive. Good quality unabridged translation from the Latin.

⭐It’s a masterpiece of science, written by the greatest brain of this country.

⭐Good book, delivered quickly…

⭐Lovely book but by no means light reading you have to really love maths
