User’s Reviews

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐Well written, of interest to those who love puzzles and some kinds of logical twists. Went on a bit long for me. But if you are on an airplane, great.

⭐Disappointing. Felt preached at a bit. Was expecting much more of specific puzzles and how to break them down into solutions.

⭐I noticed this book in a book shop, decided I wanted it (after I’d left the bookshop), so got the Kindle version. Hm. Should have saved my money. As a puzzler, I want puzzles. I got some general advice on solving puzzles (which wasn’t very helpful), and a few puzzles I hadn’t seen before. I must admit that some of these were particularly clever, but I could have got them in five pages, not 224. And I still haven’t worked out how the “hint” on the 36 Cube puzzle actually helps me solve it (so it remains on my shelf unsolved). Grrr. There’s no dilemma here. Don’t bother.

⭐I liked the conversational tone and the relationships between puzzles and everyday thinking that the author pointed out. For example, the element of the liars and truth tellers puzzle that might be found between a narcissistic lost driver and his passenger. Many of the puzzles are quite famous, but I think after Niederman’s thorough treatment of them, I’ll have more of a chance of actually remembering the specifics of the puzzle as well as the solution. I’m guessing the author, with his interest in seeing things from many angles, makes a pretty good math teacher.

⭐I just got anxiety reading the title. Like…what?

⭐Puzzles can build logic and lateral thinking skills and have been enjoyed by people in just about all times and places. In “The Puzzler’s Dilemma,” Derrick Niederman shows readers how different types of puzzles, including visual/spatial, word, and number puzzles work. The author offers tips on how to solve puzzles and uses examples from sports, politics, economics, and other areas to illustrate his points. In life we are often told to read instructions carefully, and Niederman demonstrates how taking care to verify that you understand the correct wording of a puzzle is vital to solving it. “The Puzzler’s Dilemma” is accessible to the general reader and is a good workout for your brain.

⭐I’m not sure I’ve ever written any other reviews on Amazon, but this one made me post. I’m not saying it was the best book I ever read or anything silly, but I was impressed enough to look it up on here and let ya’ll know that it’s a fun read.I’ve been a puzzler for as long as I can remember. I am a cuber, a tournament chess player, and a bit of a math genius. I found this book entertaining, as I could connect with most of the puzzles. Many of them, I had heard before (Tower of Hanoi, Monty Hall, etc.) Many of them, I had not. All of them were presented by Mr. Niederman in a clear and readable fashion.I hope you pick this one up!
