Editorial Reviews: Review “In The Rhetoric of RHETORIC Wayne C. Booth passionately and persuasively demonstrates the centrality of rhetoric to human inquiry and human interaction. Taking Booth’s manifesto seriously — responding to it in the spirit of what he calls ‘listening rhetoric’ — can improve the quality of our thought, our interactions, and, thus, our lives.” James Phelan, Ohio State University Book Description The Rhetoric Of Rhetoric is a manifesto addressed to a broad audience, dramatizing the importance of rhetorical studies and lamenting their widespread neglect. Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐Wayne Booth’s book is readable and he argues a strong case for the revival of the study of rhetoric. Booth goes one step further and argues for what can be called dialogical rhetoric. This is where parties to a discussion truly engage with each other in an attempt to understand where the other party is coming from, rather than simply trying to conquer all opposition. Booth’s so-called ‘Listening Rhetoric’ has much in common with Hans-Georg Gadamer’s notion of the fusion of horizons where different parties seek deeper understanding of each other, and through this can come to a deeper understanding of their own position. Anyone looking for a primer in rhetoric should look elsewhere as Booth’s book provides only an overview of the field. He is more concerned to raise awareness and arouse interest in a subject that has been sadly neglected for too long. Rhetoric needs to be rehabilitated and Booth’s book goes some way to achieving this.

⭐Bought for the sole purpose of a book report for a class, but actually turned out to be a great read. I was taking a rhetorical theory course, in which most of the assigned reading was lengthy and most rhetoricL authors seemed to talk circles—BUT Booth was straightforward and actually calls out other rhetorers for doing just that. Easy read, great font choice, finished it in 3 days!

⭐Love this book and Wayne C Booth as an author and scholar. I have used excerpts from this book with Writing 111 classes for introduction to rhetoric and its relevance to our modern lives. Even though it is a little older now, it is still a great resource and Booth has a wonderfully entertaining, informed yet accessible writing style that students appreciate.

⭐I love reading Wayne Booth’s books, and this has been one of my favorites. The trip to Rhetopia alone is worth the cost. And his hope for peace through the best kinds of rhetoric makes me eager to teach my writing classes next semester.

⭐Absolute garbage. I paid $32 for this, and needed it for my college class. You can barely read the digital / Kindle version of this; it looks like a really bad photo copy. I ended up ordering the hard copy, but am now outside of the window to get a refund after only having it a week. Very disappointing.

⭐The font is unreadable, and unchangeable. For what is being charged for this book, the expectation is that the implementation will at least be legible.

⭐Recommended as a great resource for gaining a grasp of the field of Rhetoric — great buy!!

⭐A oddly weak book, reads like the transcript of a series of lectures and notes. Booth must have written this in his last days.

⭐Although I find the history of rhetoric, and the history of teaching rhetoric quite interesting, I found this book too forceful in striking it’s opinion. It is very much a means for Booth to display his contempt at anyone who does not appreciate the importance of rhetoric, and him, as an academic of the subject.I found the quotes and other sources interesting and well placed, and I do appreciate the subject more now, than prior to reading this book. However it is not a substitute for any other book you may be looking for, such as The

⭐Rhetoric of Fiction

⭐, which is a suggested reading for those studying the Open University’s Advanced Creative Writing course (A363).

⭐Required reading for one of my lower-level rhetoric classes, easy to understand and apply.
