    Description

Said to have its origins in the ‘treasure texts’ that were supposedly hidden away by Padmasambhava, the Lotus Guru, in Tibet in the 8th century, The Tibetan Book of the Dead was traditionally read aloud to the dying or recently deceased as a guide to the afterlife. It explains how to recognize the true nature of the mind so that after death it will be possible to attain enlightenment and liberation from the suffering associated with the endless cycle of death and rebirth. For many, reading The Tibetan Book of the Dead has been a revelatory experience on the path to finding a sense of spirituality and self-knowledge.

⭐This edition by John Baldock is a lovely illustrated version of the original translation (by Kazi Dawa Samdup, edited by Walter Evans-Wentz and published in 1927), and as such (as a celebration of that landmark historical document) it is great, especially great since it is done up real purdy (strong colorful slipcase, gilded cover and abundant color photos within). However…. this translation isn’t considered very authoritative (being the first, incomplete and filtered through the lens of non-Buddhist Evans-Wentz’s Theosophical/Neo-Vedanta view), and this edition is obviously intended more for the general public than practicing Tibetan Buddhist. Baldock gives a nice general six page intro to the original publication from a modern (secular) perspective, and the variety of quality Tibetan Buddhist images printed on each page is sumptuous (credits and descriptive info for them are only listed together on the final page), so for what it is, it’s well done (with its more ornate – somewhat gaudy – packaging reflecting the somewhat distorted and hyped up presentation of the original book, vs. what is actually our natural ‘ordinary mind’!).For a more complete and accurate version check out the 2006 Viking/Penguin edition translated by Gyurme Dorje and edited by Thupten Jinpa and Graham Coleman). And for a fascinating critique of this original English language translation as a literary/social phenomena see Donald Lopez Jr.’s The Tibetan Book of the Dead: A Biography (Lives of Great Religious Books, 5).

⭐I have both the kindle and hardback copy of this ancient text. The hardback book is a beautiful presentation… a jewel on your bookshelf. The text increased my understanding of the Divine. It is not the easiest of reads. It takes a bit of work to decipher the meaning for yourself. For me… It was a revelation that affirmed my belief in God, Love and the Light, and the nature of “the self” beyond the illusion we call reality.

⭐Stunningly beautiful! Great for those who keep their books……

⭐Loved the slip it came in. A great replacement for my older, very beat up copy.

    ⭐Excellent

⭐Lots of detailed information and book came in hard lovely cover.

⭐Beautiful illustrations and insightful reading. Do I have the answers to a post-death life? Maybe.

⭐This book should be in every household. The illustration is beautiful. The book itself is beautiful.

⭐The book is a little bigger than expected and the book is difficult to read. I’d suggest just spending an hour learning from someone who understands it over reading yourself.

⭐As a Tibetan Buddhist I need to have this.

⭐This is a style-over-content glossy coffee table offering. Not for the serious student of Buddhism. I returned it.

⭐Fast delivery and book is in fantastic condition.

⭐Awesome book and interesting read, love the hard case for it!
