Editorial Reviews: From the Back Cover “The best scholars in the modern world illuminate the various peoples in the ancient world of the Bible in this indispensable resource for students and teachers.”–William M. Schniedewind, University of California, Los Angeles”For those interested in gaining a deeper understanding of the Scriptures, The World around the Old Testament is an eminently useful and accessible resource. The volume features detailed, well-written, and informative articles on various peoples and places mentioned in the Bible, written by leading authorities in the field. The careful attention devoted to recent archaeological excavations and ancient inscriptions is most welcome.”–Gary N. Knoppers, University of Notre Dame”The World around the Old Testament is a refreshing contribution to contextualizing the Hebrew Bible within its ancient Near Eastern and Mediterranean context. The specialists for each area focus on their particular region while tying it into the larger framework of the Hebrew Bible.”–Tammi J. Schneider, Claremont Graduate University”This is an especially important book. Nowhere else can one find, in a single volume, the kind of up-to-date and nuanced treatment of the ethnolinguistic groups of the ancient Near East that appears in this collection. Each chapter is written by a renowned scholar, and each carefully explains the sources that are used to reconstruct our understanding of the history, language, and religion of these cultures. The clear-eyed examination of current scholarly debates and the identification of key insights for the study of biblical texts also set this book apart. The World around the Old Testament will be a very productive resource for advanced students and scholars alike.”–Bruce Wells, Saint Joseph’s UniversityContributorsPierre BriantWalter Burkert†Joel S. Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐This has shown to be an excellent resource for my OT studies. It has rounded out the surrounding world of the OT, and it has an appropriate tone for someone like me who is primarily interested in the OT rather than ANE studies proper, though it has piqued my interest. Furthermore, since it is up to date, it has been helpful in terms of enlightening some earlier understandings of ANE culture found in older commentaries (eg Speiser’s Genesis).

⭐The book is poorly edited. Very few headings. Reads like the authors just slapped together their lecture notes at the last second. Not good for teaching/learning. The only people who will benefit from this are those who have already have good general knowledge of each of these ancient people groups. Then the information may provide a supplementing effect. As far as content, the subject matter is very hazy and unclear. It’s obvious that the authors are unsure about most of the content and they have to speculate since they don’t have a clue. This does not mean the authors are not experts in their field, but rather that the current science and state of actual knowledge of the time is very limited.

⭐I wanted something I could easily correlate with the Bible to identify more about the other cultures present in the Bible. This was a dense read and not easy to compare to the cultures in the Bible.

⭐An excellent resource for OT studies. Provides valuable background info.I appreciate it very much and recommend it.

⭐Excellent resource and valuable contribution on the surrounding world of the OT–something often missing in biblical exegesis.

⭐I have just finished reading this fascinating book. It is most illuminating and makes the Old Testament so much more accessible – I shall go back to it again and again -came quickly and was well-wrapped for such a hefty tome!

⭐Excellent introduction written by respected academics.
