User’s Reviews

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐Sedaris is always funny and insightful. This essay is no exception. Its only flaw is it left me wanting more.

⭐Do not read any David Sedaris books in public places. You will laugh out loud. People will stare. You will not care. But someone might get you in trouble for having so much fun for No apparent reason. Of course, there is a reason. It’s David Sedaris. It’s his fault, not yours.

⭐Very funny. Very readable, very talented author. This review requires ten more words at this point. Most of the reviews I read are garbage, why does it have to be long garbage.

⭐I’ve followed David Sedaris from his days on the public radio show, This American Life: I love David’s oral storytelling ability which his writing captures his humorously sarcastic POV (point of view) wonderfully. This series of essays allows us to find humor in the mundane and callus as well as the profane and the dark. While I enjoy the dry, sometimes dark and at times light read, if you are looking for a wetting-your-undergarments-laughing-through-it read, this is not it. Witty and clever, I believe this short read ready does an effective and efficient job capturing David’s tone through how he processes the world around him.

⭐OK I will admit that I have been under a rock for some time. This is my first read by this author and can tell by this short ‘book’ that I have truly been missing a gem.. Not any more…have him on ‘follow’ now…Absolutely a must read during these stay at home times which will get your laughter flowing with his writing and creativity. What to say about David’s latest? Relatively short but packs a wonderful punch. Truly enjoyed his humorous narrations…LoL.Most highly recommend this one. Short, sweet and hysterical…

⭐Bra is removed. So true has a statement ever been. All women think the same way. David Sedaris your observations are genuinely appreciated.

⭐Themes and Variations is an essay about the author’s view of book tours and the interactions between readers and himself as an author.Sedaris opens with an incident in 1984 in his nearby bookstore with its author events. He felt betrayed when an author signed the book he bought, without even looking at him. He vowed never to do that when he became an author. Then he starts with himself in the author’s chair—in 2013.This is about the ‘small-talk’ that occurs between writer and reader at author signings: strangers saying the strangest things. There are jokes, discussions about about underwear, and about secrets. It’s a 17-page essay that takes no time to read. It’s not brilliant. It’s just a slight distraction from reading other books.

⭐I literally hurt myself laughing so hard. The essay is very short and was finished before the pain subsided. I’m not sure why I connect to his writing so much, but I truly do. I think that so many things today have become so formulaic and predictable… movies, TV shows… I find myself mouthing dialogue I’ve never heard before right as the character speaks it. NEVER happens with a Sedaris turn of phrase. Always off-center, unexpected, outrageous and a direct hit on my funny bone. Who the hell thinks these things, let alone writes them down, I ask myself. David Sedaris…. that’s who!

⭐I was so excited to see a new David Sedaris book that I ordered it immediately. Please note, this is only an essay – not a full book (still good value at £1.99). Whilst excellent as usual, I was just settling in for a real treat of a read when the book finished! I wait in anticipation for the next full book by this outstanding author.

⭐Paid for this thinking it was a book, it was like a short ramble with someone you met for 5 minutes at a bus stop. Felt like I’d been very short changed, which is a shame as I’ve always admired his work. I had to check that I hadn’t just read the sample.

⭐This is witty on their face of things and has the reader roaring with laughter at the foibles of us humans. However, a bleaker note is struck in the observation of how crushing life can be on some people, however unattractive and unsympathetic this may appear to make them.

⭐He can just make everything funny and I like his honesty always in his writing. We are all flawed but somehow in Sedaris’s writing we can find absolution, or safety in numbers at the very least!

⭐Love the style and humour of this book, but I was amazed when I’d completed it within an hour!
