Description
The best available guide to the elastic stability of large structures, this book introduces the principles and theory of structural stability. It was co-authored by the father of modern engineering mechanics, Stephen Timoshenko, and James Gere, who updated the materials and worked closely with Dr. Timoshenko. Relevant to aspects of civil, mechanical, and aerospace engineering, this classic covers the essentials of static and dynamic instabilities.Topics range from theoretical explanations of 2- and 3-D stress and strain to practical applications such as torsion, bending, thermal stress, and wave propagation through solids. Additional subjects include beam columns, curved bars and arches, buckling of rings, and experiments and design formulas. Particularly suitable for advanced undergraduate and graduate students of engineering, this volume is also an indispensable reference for professionals.
User’s Reviews
Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:
⭐I learned mechanics of material during under graduate school study with Timoshenko’s textbook. The book was excellent. This book is another masterpiece of Timoshenko.I am now researching on film deformation. The book gave me insight to the physics on film deformation and the is plenty of formulas to be directly used in real engineering situation. If you need a deeper edition of Timoshenko’s book, this is for you.
⭐In summary, excellent for a beginners understanding in graduate level plate buckling, column buckling, energy methods, etc. I used it more for plate buckling rather then columns and shells, however still packed with useful information. Also, many professors use the problems from this book on exams, so it’s a great study guide as well. I used this book for a graduate course in structural stability. It can be very technical at sometimes, and has an abundance of information, that probably won’t apply to you, however when I found myself struggling with a topic, and the professors notes and required textbook didn’t help at all (a lot of times they didn’t) this book covered a lot of what I was missing! A lot! I found myself using it more than the assigned class textbook. And for the price, it’s worth it to give it a shot!
⭐As a professional engineer I found this book to be very informative. It does not have example problems, but in practice I use code based analysis. This book gave me a deeper understanding of where the code came from.Personally I just wanted to know concepts to keep in mind while I am designing. This book is perfect for that. I am a more recent graduate, and had no problem following the math or concepts.Timoshenko is a great author, I plan on buying his plates and shells book after I finish this one.
⭐Good quality!
⭐While the text itself is valuable, there are many typos in what appears to be an automated conversion from the hard copy format to the kindle edition. Hopefully you can follow math with typos. As is common with many kindle textbooks, the resolution on figures leaves much to be desired, and it is difficult to zoom in on a figure or equation that is formatted too small.
⭐This is a classic book on the theory of elastic stability. Most graduates students in engineering these days would have trouble understanding much of this book because they are not taught many of the analytic methods used in the book. The book assumes a solid understanding of analytic methods of structural analysis (e.g. slope-deflection method) and differential equations. Lots of good information on special cases whose solution is tabulated/graphed. Fortunately this paperback edition is cheap enough for anyone to buy.
⭐I actually have this book in electronic version. But I think it is definitely worth to have in hardcover. Thank you so much this neatly reserved book and your kind handwritten memo. I will reserve this for my life!
⭐The book itself is of a great value. However, I expected a larger size of the book format.
⭐I bought this book as a gift since I have it already on my shelf.Book’s content:It is needless introducing the father of Engineering Mechanics. The book, authored with J. M. Gere, presents the same style of other Timoshenko’s books. The books starts elegantly presenting the differential equation of beam-column. A number of applications make this textbook quite practical, rather than heavily mathematical. The core topic is buckling and bending behaviour of various structural elements (beams, bars, plates, shells, etc). The author provides useful formulations for validation of more complex cases.Product quality/service:The book arrived in time and flawless. It has a compact size and is quite handy. However, do not expect it to have a sound paper quality.Overall: I strongly recommend this book to those working in the field of engineering.
⭐It’s a must for a structural engineer. Moreover, it’s a good book for student.Perhaps, the language and the format are not clear because it s written long time ago.
⭐The book explains the theory very thoroughly but requires an understanding of the fundamental differential equations. It is recommendable for students at the end of their studies or for engineers who have all the required prerequisites and want to learn more about the subject. The book helped me automate several lateral torsional buckling problems.
⭐Excellent !
⭐Very useful reference book
