Description
The role of thermodynamics in modern physics is not just to provide an approximate treatment of large thermal systems, but, more importantly, to provide an organising set of ideas. Thermodynamics: A complete undergraduate course presents thermodynamics as a self-contained and elegant set of ideas and methods. It unfolds thermodynamics for undergraduate students of physics, chemistry or engineering, beginning at first year level. The book introduces the necessary mathematical methods, assuming almost no prior knowledge, and explains concepts such as entropy and free energy at length, with many examples. This book aims to convey the style and power of thermodynamic reasoning, along with applications such as Joule-Kelvin expansion, the gas turbine, magnetic cooling, solids at high pressure, chemical equilibrium, radiative heat exchange and global warming, to name a few. It mentions but does not pursue statistical mechanics, in order to keep the logic clear.

⭐From my experience, physics undergraduate training on thermodynamics is a bit lacking. Maybe half a semester on thermodynamics for the first year as part of a general physics training. The next time we encounter thermodynamics is probably from statistical mechanics, where the focus is typically on the statistical part rather than classical thermodynamics. It is a shame that such an important topic has so little coverage in the physics curriculum. I think Steane’s book makes up for this problem. Students can either use this book as a self-study, or study the relevant chapters from the thermodynamics point of view during a statistical physics course. This is really a great physics book to patch up our knowledge on thermodynamics. The choice of the applications is great. Thermodynamics has broad applications, not just physics but all sorts of science and engineering. It is impossible to include everything. This book selects interesting applications, and it is written with a physics flavor. Personally, I would like more discussions on heat engines and batteries as an application of entropy and chemical potential. If I have to complain one thing about the book, it would be the organization of the applications. A good deal of the book is talking about material properties, for example gases, different phases and phase transition, heat capacities, thermal conductivity, magnetism, superconductivity, surfaces, and so on. I think it would be better if some of the chapters can be reorganized to reflect their connections. Or even write a new section or chapter to discuss the fact that all these are different properties of a material and how these different aspects are originated in a material. This will give the readers a more coherent picture of all these topics rather than many things put together as a book.
⭐Fantastic.
