⭐ Be careful when you grab a tiger by the tail, you might just be waking up a whole lot of trouble you aren’t prepared to handle. In Chase’s 1954 crime thriller “Tiger by the Tail,” (one of four he put out that year), Chase offers us a twist on the old plot device of the innocent man waking up with a corpse and blood all over him. Here, a mild-mannered Clark Kent type bank teller, Ken Holland, reluctantly takes out a call girl while his wife is out of town.Seen with her by all sorts of people, Holland finds that wiping down his fingerprints doesn’t get him in the clear from either the law or the blackmailers who make use of his troubles. But what really sets this thriller over the edge is the politically connected, mob-connected serpents that have been awakened. As Holland desperately and at times ridiculously attempts to destroy evidence, half the town is looking for him and the other half trying to cover up what they think really happened.Through a comedy of errors, the entire town drowns in an explosion of violence so complete that only Chase could have dreamed it up. Slow to start, this novel picks up the pace as it moves along, gathering up speed and momentum as it barrels toward the conclusion.

⭐ Great story line

⭐ Simple plot. Right amount of twists. You feel for the characters. Ordinary hero becomes a super hero in stressed situation which is the only cliche. Read this in high school. Brought back memories reading it again..My all time favorite – “Believed Violent”

⭐ I’m a big fan of James Hadley Chase and although I understand modern writers have improved on his style but I believe the characters and morals in his books are evergreen. Howsoever late in the story, the bad folks always get their comeuppance in some twisted or amazing way- justice delayed but never denied.On a night before my semester final exam my dad got me this book and expressly instructed me to read it the following day after the exam. But I couldn’t bear the wait so I thought I could read a few pages and get the hang of the plot. Big mistake!I read the book through the night. I just couldn’t keep it down. Riveting stuff! You felt for the characters and wanted to know what happens to each of them.On a side-note, I did badly in the exam the following day- just about scraping through. After that I knew better to fool myself by saying “just a few pages” whenever I picked up a Chase book.I tested it out with my friends and they too couldn’t stop reading.This was my 5th or 6th book (and I have read a dozen or so after) and this was easily the best. Varied characters, continuously twisting storyline and an everyday hero. What’s not to like?

⭐ I am a great fan of Chase and this is one of my favorites. I liked the main character and the plot, I loved the fact that there is a moral in this story.I read Chase books in school in India and there were times when I had a Chase inside my text-book during class and I would get caught by the eagle-eyed teacher and sent out of the class as punishment. It is a pity I cannot find anyone who has even heard of Chase … and I cannot chat with anyone about Chase books !
