Description

Here it is…your irreverent introduction to the world of cutting-edge mathematics! In Trolling Euclid, author Tom Wright humorously guides you through nine of the most important unsolved problems in modern mathematics, explaining the nuances of these key problems in language that anyone from math novice to math professor can understand. Filled with wit, wisdom, irrelevant anecdotes, and flagrant historical inaccuracies, and narrated by a voice that is in turns snarky, dorky, hip, and downright quirky, Trolling Euclid introduces the reader to the math world in a way that is deep yet entirely comprehensible.

⭐I can’t think of any math book that is more fun to read than this one. In fact, I’m having trouble thinking of a book that’s this fun to read, period. I read it with a big grin on my face and genuinely laughed out loud at times. But it’s not just for laffs: there’s a lot of genuine mathematics in this book. Wright doesn’t go deep into any particular topic, but at the level he does attempt to explain things, he succeeds beautifully. For example, this book contains the clearest, most accessible explanation of what the Birch-Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture (one of the famous Millennium Problems) is that I’ve seen.I remember years ago reading a blurb regarding Dave Barry: “Mr. Barry is the funniest man in America and we should encourage him.” I want to say something similar: Tom Wright is the funniest man in mathematics and we should encourage him. Buy this book, read it, and hope he writes more.

⭐When I started reading this book, I literally had trouble putting it down. It covers some of the outstanding unsolved number theory conjectures in highly amusing prose, at which I often laughed aloud. If you’re a budding mathematician looking to go into number theory, a seasoned mathematician looking for a refresher on number theory, or just plain interested in mathematics, take a tour through this hilarious, but serious, book. You won’t be disappointed! I would personally very much enjoy attending the author’s mathematics courses at Wofford College, as I bet his current students do now. I’m now anxiously waiting for the author’s next book…which will be when??

⭐This is one of the only math books I have ever read cover-to-cover (and I’m a mathematician!). “Trolling Euclid” is an engaging introduction to key number theory problems. I’d particularly recommend it to new students of number theory who want to get a sense of what it’s all about. It’s also a good read for mathematicians who want to get a different explanation for teaching purposes. I think I’m going to draw faces on all of my elliptic curves now.

⭐The book does a very good job explaining some important open questions in number theory. The author has a sense of humor and incorporates it quite often throughout the book. Unfortunately, by the end of the book, you’re no longer laughing at the humor but are just finding it silly because it has been laid on so thick. A good editor would have perhaps found the proper balance, which would have brought my ranking up to 5 stars.

⭐This book is amazing, and as a undergraduate looking towards graduate work in mathematical education this book showed me the way I approach math isn’t wrong.

⭐One of a kind!! I cannot stop laughing out loud.. my son & wife look at me and go like “what’s wrong with daddy today?”Laughing (especially at equations) is a great way to health and inspiration so I recommend this to any curious mind who wants to live long

⭐A smooth and entertaining read. It’s engaging, entertaining and definitely not lacking any of the humor it promises. If you’re looking for a book with vital footnotes and just the right mix of theorems and tall tales, then I definitely recommend this book. Oh, and you learn about number theory.

⭐this writer is the funniest math writer I’ve read in a while

⭐Amazing value! A maths book that describes seriously demanding conjectures and yet preserves throughout a jokey and genuinely funny style. It deserves to be the beginning of a genre.

⭐Great book for math enthusiasts. I never got bored . Full of pop culture references and jokes that made reading fun.
