ONE OF THE NEW YORK TIMES TOP TEN BOOKS OF 2022 ONE OF THE WASHINGTON POST TOP TEN BOOKS OF 2022ONE OF BARACK OBAMA’S FAVORITE BOOKS OF 2022LONGLISTED FOR THE 2022 BOOKER PRIZEAnd named one of the BEST BOOKS OF 2022 by The New Yorker, Vogue, Time, NPR, Oprah Daily, Esquire, BookPage, and more“Buzzy and enthralling …A glorious novel about empires and erasures, husbands and wives, staggering fortunes and unspeakable misery…Fun as hell to read.” —Oprah Daily”A genre-bending, time-skipping story about New York City’s elite in the roaring ’20s and Great Depression.”—Vanity Fair“A riveting story of class, capitalism, and greed.” —Esquire”Captivating.”—NPR”Exhilarating.” —New York TimesAn unparalleled novel about money, power, intimacy, and perceptionEven through the roar and effervescence of the 1920s, everyone in New York has heard of Benjamin and Helen Rask. He is a legendary Wall Street tycoon; she is the daughter of eccentric aristocrats. Together, they have risen to the very top of a world of seemingly endless wealth—all as a decade of excess and speculation draws to an end. But at what cost have they acquired their immense fortune? This is the mystery at the center of Bonds, a successful 1937 novel that all of New York seems to have read. Yet there are other versions of this tale of privilege and deceit. Hernan Diaz’s TRUST elegantly puts these competing narratives into conversation with one another—and in tension with the perspective of one woman bent on disentangling fact from fiction. The result is a novel that spans over a century and becomes more exhilarating with each new revelation. At once an immersive story and a brilliant literary puzzle, TRUST engages the reader in a quest for the truth while confronting the deceptions that often live at the heart of personal relationships, the reality-warping force of capital, and the ease with which power can manipulate facts.

User’s Reviews

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐Warning — there’s a bit of a reveal here. This novel, written in 4 parts, requires patience to find out what it’s about, and if one sticks with it to the end, the reader realizes that it has been worth it. Written in 4 parts that from the titles of each seemed to be unconnected, when I started, I had no idea just what was going on. Was this single novel in fact going to be a group of 4 different stories? The first part I found difficult going, the writing style stilted and dated, though the story was interesting in an odd way. And then I moved on to part 2 and began to see that there might be a connection, maybe, but it wasn’t clear just what — but the writing style changed dramatically. Part 3 again is different, now a far more accessible writing style, and this is where we learn the tie between parts 1 and 3. The novel finishes with part 4, which in a way is a sort of epilogue, with a major twist on the truth of parts 1-3. Ultimately, when all the parts are integrated by the reader, this is a powerful book about the worlds of wealth in NY in the early 20th century, but more about personal relationships, ego, and self-deception. Well worth reading.

⭐In a culture plagued with “alternative facts,” Diaz describes villains of the financial crash of 1929 from four distinct perspectives, and connects the need for trust in family and business relationships with the need for trust in financial markets and the government.

⭐This is a great novel if one is of a literary bent. The author explores cultural issues including the discounting of the feminine, money, power and the way the stories we read and believe are shaped by the author and affect our own understandings of the world. It is not a novel in which one would necessarily fall in love with the characters; in fact it is essentially the same story told from four different perspectives, in four different styles, all of which reflect literary and cultural trends. I found it fascinating and enlightening, although recognize that is not a novel for the reader simply in search of an entertaining story.

⭐Told from several different perspectives, Trust helps you to realize that not everything is as it seems and how easily the truth can be hidden or manipulated. It is a great metaphor for the times of today where it is important to understand the motivations of the story teller.

⭐Any review that I would attempt would not do this brilliant work justice. Herman Diaz’s talent to allow one to become addicted to his dark, confusing, and shocking literary tunnels is in itself extraordinary. His play with multiple styles of writing is a show of great literary bravery.

⭐I was a little surprised to see the relatively large number of 3 and 4 stars. This is a 5-star book that deserved its place on the NY Times 2022 reading list.

⭐Absolutely captivating. Well written and extremely well researched. I highly recommend. Diaz merits the Nobel for such a fine piece of literature.

⭐A Roman à clef inside an autobiography inside a biography inside a journal make for a clever Russian nesting doll of a book.

⭐Ostensibly, it is the story of one New York banker, whose career spans the Wall Street Crash of 1929. The reader is given a view of the man from four different angles, but I found none of the angles convincing or their subject engaging. Being rich does not necessarily make you interesting and clever authors do not necessarily write good novels. More than one of the many gushing reviews of this book refer to its many layers and what each one reveals, but peeling an onion, layer by layer, is not a very interesting or enjoyable experience.

⭐It helps to have a lively interest in how financial markets operate to enjoy this novel. I don’t have such an interest, but even if I did, I would have found it far too long. The whole of the first section could have been cut with no loss. I had to struggle to finish the book, and when the big reveal comes in the final section, it is unsurprising to put it mildly. I am baffled by the rave reviews.

⭐Trust by Hernan Diaz is a 2022 novel, describing the life of wealthy 1920s financier Andrew Bevel. We learn about him via four contrasting sources – a novel about Bevel, Bevel’s own self-serving autobiography, an account by the woman hired to ghost-write that autobiography, and the diary of Bevel’s wife, Mildred. All these stories have a different take on the way people try to shape and control their lives. Much is made of the way wealthy individuals manipulate reality, hiring ghost writers, for example, to compose the sort of life they want, while suppressing alternate versions. Things get confusing in these expensively created fictional worlds. Acting successful to be successful is what we call optimism, which can also become delusion. It’s tricky to tell the difference.A novel is a good place to explore these matters since it deals in fictions, and might be able to reveal what hides in the small print.

⭐What is this you think? The quaint style; the format of novellas on the contents page? After too many novels which are light summaries of real people and events with no added character, plot or depth this novel handles its subject expertly.

⭐A book with many hidden insights, written both in diary and first and third person from the perspective of a polished writer. The emotional upticks happen in the thought process of the writer. A very interesting book.
