Description

In 1941, Henry Miller, the author of Tropic of Cancer, was commissioned by a Los Angeles bookseller to write an erotic novel for a dollar a page. Under the Roofs of Paris (originally published as Opus Pistorum) is that book. Here one finds Miller’s characteristic candor, wit, self-mockery, and celebration of the good life. From Marcelle to Tania, to Alexandra, to Anna, and from the Left Bank to Pigalle, Miller sweeps us up in his odyssey in search of the perfect job, the perfect woman, and the perfect experience.

User’s Reviews

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐Henry Miller wrote this in the days when he needed to make a quick buck. This is not part of his mainstream work. It is, simply and explicitly, porn! He got paid a dollar a page for writing this. Back then, before porn dvd’s and the Internet, you could buy the basic, soft core mags, available at any news stand, or go to the porn store and get the “hard stuff’ (pun accidental but I like it) like the mags imported from Sweden and reel to reel porn movies (without sound!) . There were also paperback books, which were just an excuse for something “dirty” to read. The stories were written by men with very little talent as writers. It was just a way to make a few bucks. This is what Henry Miller has written here. A “dirty” book. Except that the man was talented as hell and couldn’t help writing LITERATURE. This is Miller at his raunchiest and least reserved (if you could ever call him reserved). From the first page he gets you into the most outrageous sexual situations. It’s all in here – and more!

⭐Want to figure out if you’re truly a kinky person? Read this book and you’ll find out! While reading, if you have the battle within yourself of, “I WOULD NEVER DO THIS!!! This is wrong!!! OMG why is this turning me on!!!”- You’re probably a person who loves kink. You’ll either love it or hate it! This book is very taboo! It crosses boundaries and pushes limits of what is acceptable sexual behavior in our society! However, I view these writings of Henry Miller as a way to discover things about yourself.

⭐Do not let anyone under the age of 18 read this book. It is very graphic and at times very disturbing.

⭐This book was different than what I normally read. I guess in the time the book was written, it was daily living in other countries. Not my idea of fiction or reality!

⭐Graphic, sad sex – sad in the sense that they’re usually drunk as all get out and no one seems to have any true feelings for anyone at least in what I read. I have a hard time with Miller’s portrayal of women as just “c__ts” as he calls each and every one it seems. I kept an open mind as best that I could and read a good portion, but it was repetitive and crude. He may be one of the greats, but this is not.

⭐Great product, arrived on time.

⭐A must read for Henry Miller fans. Not for prudes. Every type of sexuality known to man. Some only known to space men!

⭐The inspiration to all the erotica I’ll ever write. This book is so good. Groundbreaking tone of voice.

⭐Absolutely appalling book featuring gang rape, paedophilia, and bestiality, all treated very lightheartedly. Women treated horrendously throughout – objectified, used, and disrespected continuously. Would give zero stars if I could. Book should come with a warning. Did not finish and actually threw my copy in the bin so there is one less copy in the world. I have never ever done that before. I am not a prude and have read and enjoyed Anais Nin, and I knew the book had sexual content, so I knew what I was letting myself in for. Hideous book that has no place in the world.

⭐How much of this is imagined and how much is drawn from the writers experience is anybody’s guess, but its wild, Rabelaisian fun, full of mad bad characters letting loose in the Paris of their dreams.

⭐Very raunchy. Miller lets it ‘ all hang out’ in those early days in Clichy. Probably deserved to be banned, Ha Ho.

⭐Loved Miller all my life.but couldn’t bother to finish it just repetitive porn

⭐Muy aburrido, no tiene nada que ver con el Miller que conocía en otras obras. No lo considero erótico, más bien mecánico, textos repetitivos y ninguna expectación. Se nota que fue un encargo que debía cumplir. A evitar!
