Description

Psychology is now ready for unified theories of cognition―so says Allen Newell, a leading investigator in computer science and cognitive psychology. Not everyone will agree on a single set of mechanisms that will explain the full range of human cognition, but such theories are within reach and we should strive to articulate them.In this book, Newell makes the case for unified theories by setting forth a candidate. After reviewing the foundational concepts of cognitive science―knowledge, representation, computation, symbols, architecture, intelligence, and search―Newell introduces Soar, an architecture for general cognition. A pioneer system in artificial intelligence, Soar is the first problem solver to create its own subgoals and learn continuously from its own experience.Newell shows how Soar’s ability to operate within the real-time constraints of intelligent behavior, such as immediate-response and item-recognition tasks, illustrates important characteristics of the human cognitive structure. Throughout, Soar remains an exemplar: we know only enough to work toward a fully developed theory of cognition, but Soar’s success so far establishes the viability of the enterprise.Given its integrative approach, Unified Theories of Cognition will be of tremendous interest to researchers in a variety of fields, including cognitive science, artificial intelligence, psychology, and computer science. This exploration of the nature of mind, one of the great problems of philosophy, should also transcend disciplines and attract a large scientific audience.

User’s Reviews

Editorial Reviews: Review “Ranges authoritatively over 40 years of research in psychology, artificial intelligence and computer science… Lively, lucid and persuasive.”―John Fox, Nature“If you want to understand mental architecture, you must read this book.”―Philip N. Johnson-Laird, Princeton University“It is an understatement to say that [this book] is indispensable reading for both established and budding cognitive scientists―and for researchers in the neighboring domains of neuroscience and artificial intelligence as well.”―Herbert A. Simon, Carnegie Mellon University“An extremely important contribution to the foundations of cognitive science… Because Newell tackles this integration head on, he has set an agenda for the next twenty years of cognitive science.”―George A. Miller, Princeton University

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐Unified Theories of Cognition by Newell presents the theoretical ground-work of SOAR, one of the most important cognitive architectures ever developed (the others being ACT-R by Anderson, EPIC by Kieras, and CAPS, now 4CAPS, by Thibadeau, Just, Carpenter, and Varma). This book and papers/texts of ACT-R, EPIC, and 4CAPS, and the SOAR Project form the foundation of those interested in the field of cognitive architectures and provides the strongest possible foundation for those interested in graduate school and research in this area of a.i. Those interested in the most recent revisions to the theory and applications should consult the SOAR website.

⭐Of all the classes I’ve taken so far (senior in Computer Science Engineering), this was by far the hardest book to get through. I found it insanely difficult to glean any information at all from it. If you need it for a class, you don’t really have a choice, but if you’re reading this for fun, I would recommend looking at other books.
