Description

This is a guide to Korean language usage for students who have already acquired the basics of the language and wish to extend their knowledge and organise accumulated bits of information into a comprehensive picture. It is designed to promote the fluency and accuracy vital to effective communication, provides excellent coverage of proverbs, idioms, and sound symbolism, is tailored to the needs of the English-speaking user, and will be invaluable to anyone requiring up-to-date guidance on points of grammar and vocabulary. Unlike conventional grammars, it highlights those areas of vocabulary and grammar which cause most difficulty to English speakers. Special attention is given throughout the book to the appropriateness of different language styles in various situational contexts. Clear, readable, and easy to consult, it is essential for all those who wish to take their Korean beyond the beginner’s level.

User’s Reviews

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐I’ve been studying Korean for three years now (1.5 years at the Defense Language Institute and a year as an exchange student at the Korean Air Force University) and I still have learned a lot from this book. In particular, it cleared up the confusion I had about a lot of grammar concepts and word usage. If you are a committed learner of Korean, this book should be at the top of your list of books to buy. Like the other review said, this is probably the most important Korean textbook written for native English speakers written in the past decade. I’m sure I’m going to wear this book out reading and re-reading it.

⭐I am really enjoying this book, as it covers the cultural aspects of Korean language, including instructions on when to use honorifics and how to phrase things in Korean. While I have near native pronunciation and can understand Korean to almost the news level, I need a reference guide that explains the grammar so that I can properly speak in a variety of settings and not just with my parents.

⭐Super book for grammar. Loaded with many examples and very well organized so that it is easy to solve whatever issue I have in composing something in Korean.

⭐What a great book. I have been studying this with “Korean Grammar in Use”, and I have learned a lot. This book teaches everything – some grammar, etiquette, useful expressions and makes the language really alive. Like the title of the book, it really lays out how the language is used by people in real life — something that can be lost in grammar books or other sorts of language books. It’s very complete too — it speaks a little in the first chapter about how banmal and other speech forms are used. Without this information, you can get lost trying to understand Korean, as speech and written forms of Korean can be different and within these forms, there is variation. I am studying this book in piecemeal fashion while I am studying other books (grammar, vocabulary and phrase books) — taking from it what I need at the moment. Later, as I improve my Korean, I will study it in more detail and try to memorize some of the expressions and phrases given in the examples.

⭐If you have undergone university or non-self study I highly recommend this book to supplement and augment your formal instruction. This along with my university instruction have given me much deeper knowledge of Korean grammar and agency with grammar points. It has varying levels–its in English, and most is approachable to intermediate learners, but some aspects are quite advanced, which is good, you can grow into the text.

⭐I bought this many years ago while studying Korean in university, which I did quite intensely and I was approaching advanced skills, hovering around intermediate high. I didn’t go into a field using the language, so I let it drop off for half a decade. I bought it before I did language study in Korea so the book was too intense overall but had good parts still. That was as a beginner in semester 3 of college Korean. But now I see that’s fine–buy this book at any level, more of it will open up as you develop your skills.I am waking my Korean skills from their slumber, delighted to find this book so much more accessible–my skills had improved so much in Korea, and I found myself teaching English grammar at a high level to US high school students in my professional journey. So my understanding of grammar and some linguistics-lite has joined with the (once) intermediate-high speaking/reading skills (writing was never that good but it comes to fruition last, no?) that together make this a very, very potent aid. Every page is full to the brim with helpful info, and not just for mid or low high folks, I’m sure advanced speakers will delight in using this.Everyone else’s reviews do a great job representing the book.

⭐The main subject of the book is the social appropriateness of what to say or write in Korean. The first chapter is an extensive guide to the proper use of the speech styles, and the second chapter concerns how to use of honorifics. The other 20 chapters of the book contain a large collection (my estimate is 4000 to 4500) of natural Korean sentences with quite good English translations, grouped for suitability in hundreds of social situations. No grammatical explanation of the forms used in the sentences is given, which may be puzzling or taxing occasionally. As said the emphasis is on social appropriateness, and as such the collection is very valuable. Definitely recommended for the intermediate or preferably advanced student.
