    User’s Reviews

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐Ronald Firbank (1896-1926), a successor to Oscar Wilde, had an enormous influence on the next generation of writers, Oxbridge’s Best and Brightest, Evelyn Waugh among them, who not only attempted to copy his dry style but his way of looking at the world as well. His sparse, snappy manner of writing dialogue, very original in its time, can be detected in the work of everyone from Hemingway to PG Wodehouse. Firbank is enormously clever, often annoyingly so, as one aphorism follows another. He writes the sort of book that every over-educated graduate student dreams of finding time to do. To some more elderly readers today he is an acquitted taste, a bit old-fashioned, a but too self-adoring for the modern palette, but still worth reading.

⭐This is a book by someone who thinks that it is possible to write like Oscar Wilde with half the brains of Lord Alfred Douglas.

⭐What no one would guess from the previous review is that Firbank is a sort of god of camp – his books aren’t just just stylish but exquisitely risque. One of his characters is writing a book about “Women queens of England.” Perhaps that gives some idea …

⭐Ronald Firbank is undoubtedly one of the greatest English comic writers of any era-splendidly funny with a piercing wit ,and a great influence on many who followed : Waugh and Orton for example!

⭐Wonderful camp, a master of allusive dialogue. It’s just a shame that ‘Valmouth’ and ‘Sorrow in Sunlight’ aren’t included.

⭐Not to be missed. Read it with patience and relish every word. I read it twice, finding fresh nuances in every sentence. ‘With a loop of pearls, Mrs. Shamefoot flicked at a passing bat.’ Ronald Firbank is in a valhalla all of his own.
