    The importance of vorticity and vortex dynamics has now been well rec- nized at both fundamental and applied levels of ?uid dynamics, as already anticipatedbyTruesdellhalfcenturyagowhenhewrotethe?rstmonograph onthesubject, The Kinematics of Vorticity(1954);andasalsoevidencedby the appearance of several books on this ?eld in 1990s. The present book is characterizedbythefollowingfeatures: 1. A basic physical guide throughout the book. The material is directed by a basic observation on the splitting and coupling of two fundamental processes in ?uid motion, i.e., shearing (unique to ?uid) and compre- ing/expanding.Thevorticityplaysakeyroleintheformer,andavortex isnothingbuta?uidbodywithhighconcentrationofvorticitycompared to its surrounding ?uid. Thus, the vorticity and vortex dynamics is – cordinglyde?nedasthetheoryofshearingprocessanditscouplingwith compressing/expandingprocess. 2. A description of the vortex evolution following its entire life.Thisbegins from the generation of vorticity to the formation of thin vortex layers andtheirrolling-upintovortices,fromthevortex-corestructure,vortex motionandinteraction,totheburstofvortexlayerandvortexintosma- scalecoherentstructureswhichleadstothetransitiontoturbulence,and ?nallytothedissipationofthesmalleststructuresintoheat. 3. Wide range of topics.Inadditiontofundamentaltheoriesrelevanttothe abovesubjects,theirmostimportantapplicationsarealsopresented.This includes vortical structures in transitional and turbulent ?ows, vortical aerodynamics, and vorticity and vortices in geophysical ?ows. The last topic was suggested to be added by Late Sir James Lighthill, who read carefullyanearlydraftoftheplannedtableofcontentsofthebookin1994 andexpressedthathelikes”allthematerial”thatweproposedthere. It starts with a brief review of fundamentals of fluid dynamics, with an innovative emphasis on the intrinsic orthogonal decomposition of fluid dynamic process, by which one naturally identifies the content and scope of vorticity and vortex dynamics. This is followed by a detailed presentation of vorticity dynamics as the basis of later development. In vortex dynamics part the book deals with the formation, motion, interaction, stability, and breakdown of various vortices. Typical vortex structures are analyzed in laminar, transitional, and turbulent flows, including stratified and rotational fluids. Physical understanding of vertical flow phenomena and mechanisms is the first priority throughout the book. To make the book self-contained, some mathematical background is briefly presented in the main text, but major prerequisites are systematically given in appendices. Material usually not seen in books on vortex dynamics is included, such as geophysical vortex dynamics, aerodynamic vortical flow diagnostics and management.

    ⭐The book gathers many previously scattered result and is written at an level and with the choice of subjects that suit me very well (I do research in astrophysics).Flow decomposition methods are presented nicely and succinctly. The range of topics is commendable. References are given in appropriate quantity. I would definitely rate the book as 4 or maybe even 5 stars, if not for the editorial aspect.The reading is substantially less fun than it should be, because of sloppy editorial work Springer has (or maybe hasn’t at all?) done on this text.The text is marred by grammatical and stylistic language problems, sometimes more than one per page. Take p.42 (but that’s just a random example): A sentence “The formulas not only show (..) but also, via (2.103), tells how fast the influnce of (..) increases.” is followed almost immediately by this beautiful statement, which am I still trying to decipher: “It does not care any boundary condition for nabla phi and nabla cross psi.” I almost feel that learning some Chinese might be helpful..I hope that Springer corrects itself in a second edition of this useful book.
